    Shamelessly stolen from heliotropic2005

    Favourite bands
(top 10 in no particular order)
Audioslave, Cave In, Econoline Crush, Failure, Filter, God Is an Astronaut, Hum, National Skyline, Porcupine Tree, Rush

Favourite albums (one each from my faves above)
    Audioslave by Audioslave (self titled!)
Tides of Tomorrow by Cave In
    ÇalCatch Without Arms by dredg
The Devil You Know by Econoline Crush
    Magnified by Failure
    Title of Record by Filter
All Is Violent, All Is Bright by God is an Astronaut
    Downward Is Heavenward by Hum
This = Everything by National Skyline
    Stars Die by Porcupine Tree

    Greatest single ever made:
Not my all-time, but more of a recent fave - ÇalFire Flies and Empty Skies by God is an Astronaut
Honorable mention: ÇalTom Sawyer by Rush

    Favourite box sets
Yeesh, I don't really buy many box sets.

    Favourite Greatest Hits:
Nor Greatest Hits! If I had to pick one though, The Spirit of Radio by Rush.

    First CD bought:
Oh man, if I could even remember... I think it was a Prozak CD. Can't even remember the name. SO LONG ago. It actually could've been Daft Punk - Discovery.

    First Concert:
Finger Eleven, sometime late May '05.

    Favourite Concert:
Econoline Crush at Lucky Bar. The show just felt so inimate and awesome, I loved it. Plus I got a signed CD from Trevor, so win-win!

    Concert You Wish You'd Seen:
Would have loved to see Rush early 70s/80s, or even that Led Zeppelin concert that happened a few months ago (ticket prices were in the thousands if memory serves).

Best Use of Music In Film:
Eh, not much of a movie-goer yasee, so I can't really answer this one effectively. Maybe I'll edit in a response later.

Best Use of Music In TV series:
I don't really watch a lot of TV where good music would be required. Comedy is all that's needed, folks!

    Favourite music books:
    Don't really read them. D'oh!

    Favourite Songwriters:
Geddy Lee, Roger Waters, probably some more I can't think of at the moment.

    Favourite album covers:
Fly by Night - Rush, Gorillaz - Demon Days, Hum - Downward Is Heavenward, Econoline Crush - Affliction, Failure - Fantasic Planet ...ah this list will get long fast, but those are some more memorable faves.

Least fav album covers to albums you like/love/don't mind
Not a fan of the new Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling. Really though, no album art makes me wretch in disgust or anything.

    Favourite Music DVDs:
    Don't have any.

Artist You Will Always Believe In:
None come to mind that actually might need to be believed in, that is to say if their music was going stale or something.

    Artist You Will Always Defend:
Finger Eleven, if I had to pick. Their newest album (Them vs. You vs. Me) was pretty bleh at best, but seriously their older stuff is awesome! I'll never forget their encore showing of "Good Times."

    Albums You Will Always Defend:
I'll have to skip this one. I'm bad at defending my music tastes. I like what I like, simple as that!

Singers Who Can Make Your Skin Crawl:
Any vocalist that relies on guttural screaming or yelling in place of actual vocals. Mostly prevalent in many of my friend's music.

Artists I'm Supposed to like, but don't.
If you mean friends that like to push other artists on me? Plenty, I guess. My tastes are my own here, not gonna be pushing whatever shit you've got onto me unless I like it! Can't really name some specifics, though.

Song You Can't Stand by an Artist You Like:
I'm too forgiving to actually settle on a song (really though I can't think of any).

    Artist Who Broke Your Heart:
Linkin Park! What happened after Meteora?! Rap and nu metal don't mix. I pretty much gave up on them after that.

    Band That Should Break Up:
Not that I'm insinutating anything, but if I really had to choose... well I can't!

Bands That Should Get Back Together:
Hum, Slowdive (more I say! MORE!!)

    Guilty Pleasure:
Disturbed, some Avril Lavigne songs (damn you Burnout Paradise and EBA!), probably some more I'm forgetting.

Well there you have it, my first Journal. Enjoy reading (even if it's only AC!)

    Babylon Zoo ÇalSpaceman
    The Boy With the X-Ray Eyes;
    Katie Melua - Spaceman
    Piece by Piece (DVD)
Babylon Zoo
В том же году Katie Melua отметилась кавером на ÇalJust Like Heaven The Cure.

    Mansun
    ÇalNegative
    Six
“I look downwards!”

    The Verve
    ÇalSonnet
    Urban Hymns
“Yes, there's love if you want it
Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord”

    dredg
    ÇalCatch Without Arms
    Catch Without Arms

    Porcupine Tree
    Lazarus
    Deadwing

    Feist
    ÇalOne Evening
    Let It Die

    Ours
    ÇalSometimes
    Distorted Lullabies
Muse.

    Duran Duran
    ÇalCome Undone
    The Wedding Album

    Mew
    ÇalThe Zookeeper's Boy
    And The Glass Handed Kites
“Are you my lady, are you my lady, a-a-a-are you, are you?”

    Coldplay
    ÇalSwallowed in the Sea
    X&Y

    The Brothers Four ÇalGreenfields
    Greatest Hits;
    Faultline ÇalGreenfields
    Your Love Means Everything;
    Эдита Пьеха - Город детства;
    Стас Пьеха - Город детства
“Once there were greenfields..”
“Where are the greenfields that we-E-E used to roam?”

    Gary Jules
    ÇalMad World
    Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets
Только ÇalMad World Tears for Fears.
“Hello teacher, tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me”

    Slipknot
    Vermilion Pt. 2
    Vol. 3 The Subliminal Verses

  • NM - Seven (Jimmy Eat World, dredg, Boys Night Out, Red Hot Chili Peppers)

    8 Nis 2007, 23:14 yazan ScarletStarlett

    Originally I had picked

    Jimmy Eat World
    dredg
    Boys Night Out

but then I added "old school RHCP" to the mix just because I recently got their What Hits!? album as a gift and decided to explore their older, funkier side (I know, I'm a bad fan - it took me this long to finally get to it).

Anyway, I think this was kind of a bad mix of artists, because I had no desire to listen to the playlist I created of these artists at all these past two weeks, and really had to force myself to do it, which has never happened before. I kind of wanted to attribute this to the general "depressing" nature of these bands, but then I realized that that doesn't even really make sense. So I don't know what it was, but this was a tough week.

Jimmy Eat World - I don't think there's too many people who DON'T know ÇalSweetness and ÇalThe Middle, and yes, these two songs were also my intro to this band. I never bothered to research anything else by them, except for one day when I heard Çal23 on somebody's MySpace page and was absolutely floored. And I'm like most people on MySpace - as soon as I hear a song on somebody's page, I usually turn it off just because I don't care enough to listen to whatever song they think is so awesome (my page, however, pimps my favourite songs all the time. Yes, I'm a hypocrite, deal). However, for some reason, the first notes of this song made me stop. And listen. And listen. For the entire 7-something minutes I sat there in silence, listening, absolutely amazed. It's SUCH a beautiful song, and it really made me look at Jimmy Eat World with new eyes. I downloaded a couple of more recommended songs from Futures, which was newly-released at that time - ÇalKill and ÇalPolaris, and liked those too. Not as much as 23, though, but still.
And still, even after all that, I never really bothered listening to much more. I don't know why - I guess I used to be a lot more closed-minded about music back then than I am now.
In any case, they made my list this time, and I really do not understand why this band has such a bad rep. They get bashed and made fun of all the time, but now, after downloading stuff from both Futures and Bleed American, I really don't see why.
The two albums show a good mix of music - the upbeat and catchy Bleed American, and the slower and more somber Futures. I wouldn't even be able to pick a favourite - they're both good in their own respects.
So I really have come to like this band a fair amount, and will buy both albums in the future (when, you know, I have money again). And I really don't understand why so many people hate them. Unless it's all based on the fact that the lead singer has a really dorky haircut. Then I guess the hate is somewhat understandable.

dredg - I saw this band on the Taste of Chaos tour last year (I was there for Thrice), but before that I had never even heard of them. Anyway, my first impression of them was a good one - I thought their sound was a bit similar to that of Thrice's in their Vheissu era, and I was in love with that album at that time.
I later heard ÇalBug Eyes on somebody's MySpace page (wow, two lame MySpace mentions in one entry), and it brought back good memories of seeing them live, so I downloaded it and was very much in like. Typically enough, though, I never downloaded anything else (wow, this whole New Music thing is a real lifesaver for me, clearly - I used to be so damn closed-minded!).
I'm glad I finally got to them now. I'm not quite sure how I'd describe their sound - they are quite Thrice-like, but at the same time they are still obviously different. I like the lead singer's voice quite a bit - it has a pretty interesting tone. The music would actually be very different with a different lead singer - his voice really makes a huge impact on dredg's sound. I like the depth of the music too - all the different guitar melodies flow together quite beautifully to create a very interesting sound.
I have several favourites from this band now, besides the aforementioned Bug Eyes, like ÇalJamais Vu, ÇalOde to the Sun, ÇalCatch Without Arms, and ÇalSang Real.
Good band - I'll add Catch Without Arms to my list of albums I have to pick up in the near future.

Boys Night Out - I know of this band because of my two close friends who love them, and therefore I was forced to listen to these guys all the time while we'd be in the car driving around aimlessly. Well, I think I have a few negative memories or something associated with several of the songs from this band - for about half of the songs I downloaded (I think I downloaded most if not all of Trainwreck), I just couldn't get into the music. I guess it's also possible that I just don't like this style of music, but it really feels as if it goes a bit deeper than that. It's almost like I have some sort of a resentment for this band. Crazy, I know, but it's how it feels.
I did like ÇalRelapsing a whole lot, and I think it's one of the few Boys Night Out songs that brings forth a very positive memory. Plus it's just so familiar, and in a good way. And it's just pretty different from the rest of their songs - even though I do hate the girl vocals. Ah well, can't have everything, I guess.
I also like several others - ÇalComposing, ÇalMedicating, and ÇalWaking.
So I'm kind of half and half on this band, but I'll probably end up buying Trainwreck in the future anyway, just because I think the whole idea of a concept album is interesting.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - So it took me a long time to get to this - pre-BSSM era Chili Peppers. I guess it was because I had always heard about how different their style of music was back then (as compared to their more recent stuff), and since I wasn't sure whether I'd like the funkier sound, I avoided listening to it. I guess I just didn't want to be disappointed by my favourite band?
Well now that I've finally taken the plunge, I really don't understand what I was so afraid of. For one thing, even if I DIDN'T like it, it's not like it'd be that big of a deal anyway. And second, putting it off just made me a lousy fan.
Anyway, they took a little while to grow on me, but I really have fallen in love with a lot of these songs. It's obviously a different sound from what I had always been used to, but it's still really good, and it's still really Chili Peppers. If anything, I'm amazed at their ability to change and adapt with the times. They do it in a way that doesn't feel fake at all, because they still retain their Chili Pepper flavour. I'm not sure if I'm even making any sense anymore, but anyway. Point being, I liked it, and I don't know why it took me so long to get to this.
