I bought this album when it came out but didn't give it the credit it deserves until now. Wow, it is amazing! I love The Rip (obv) but also the New Order/Joy Division-esque guitar at the end of We Carry On.

This album is pretty disappointing coming from one of the pioneers of trip-hop. I might not have been so disappointed if I hadn't expected actual trip-hop instead of downtempo vocal synthpop and the like.

@revensanchez: I think that is what Portishead was going for. The whole album is just alienating, like they want you to be on edge during the whole thing. Even the vinyl version, it's a 45 and there are two records with two sides each, not enough time to settle down, it keeps you uncomfortable both with the sound and making you get up to flip the record over so frequently.

this is a great album. realized that pink floyd aren't conceived as 'electronic' ? THIRD has less electronic effects than some pink floyd songs. listening to music is pure perception, we might easily confess that this music is some kind of post-modern 'rock' music. portishead is more and more abandoning the trip-hop style, it's only a label going with the group.

Definately my favorite album from this year...can't compare it to Dummy or Portishead though, this one is a totally different direction for them but I'm definately digging it. Each album of theirs is a revelation to me.
