This tag is positively hopeless. When you listen to a band or a singer you should somehow be aware of their gender, unless you have problems with distinguishing and need it written down.

Just about all band bands with female vocalists get tagged with this, but you don't see "male vocalists" on the male bands. Is it because the norm is that vocalists are male, so when they are female it's necessary to mention it (as opposed to not mentioning it when they are male)? [2]

Yeah, LilleFluff's right. I find the female vocalists tag meaningless and quite sexist. Happens to too many of my artists. And there is no such thing as alternative on its own. All artists are alternative to each other. It should be alternative rock, alternative hip-hop etc. And finally, indie specifies the label. Not sound.
