Worthless tag. If people insist on using this, it should really be automatically split into two separate ones (Japanese, Rock) "J-Rock" is up there as being one of the most lazy classifications in the tagging system. Stop using it, please.

Japanese music outside of japan is doom to have anime fanboys as their only fanbase. Then again, they usually listen to just atrocious vk bands and plastic idols.

'Kei' means 'style' - visual kei isn't about a sound, it's about a visual asthetic. Japanese bands of any genre can have a visual kei look, but mostwho have adopted the extreme look are also typically extreme music. doesn't make sense for a light rock band to wear big costumes and have outrageous hair, but doesn't mean it doesn't happen. In short, right or wrong, 'Jrock' and 'visual kei' both refer to a wide variety of bands, for totally diferent reasons, so don't bother getting upset about the top bands not being what YOU think is right.

Tags ARE NOT GENRES. If you don't think 'j-rock' is a proper genre... fair enough. But I can't see any reason why having tags for other specific purposes is unreasonable.

Oh, this page is always full of arguments. It shows just how questionable J-Rock is as a tag. But if people use it as a tag, then what's to say it's not one? In any case, you don't see this kind of argument on the Norwegian Black Metal page or whatever, lol. I say that it's the choice of the tagger to decide whether or not it's really a tag or not. J-Metal, which is similar in a lot of respects to the J-Rock tag in how questionable it is, has really helped me in the past find some really brilliant music artists. I found Dir en grey through listening to Maximum the Hormone. Yes, those bands are totally different, but I don't mind seeing them using the same tag. It's like tagging both Metallica and Endless Dismal Moan as metal. They both fit the genre and both are TOTALLY different. Are arguments over a tag truly necissary? This isn;t like Female Fronted Metal, which I respect as a tag people make, but for validity is FAR worse than J-Rock.

@Nogenocide: Well, yeah. It's just rock music, just from another country. J-rock/j-pop/j-metal as well as using the similar tag for music coming from Korea and China make their music seem like some special ed kids that need different treatment from the rest. It's overlooking that some bands have roots in different styles like progressive, neo-classical, grunge, goth, etc. by just calling it all "JPOP". If tags like this stick around, then don't start complaining when everything that comes out of Finland is referred to as "F-Pop" or everything from Germany is "G-Rock".

I think it's really because J-pop and J-rock are like, the ONLY tags within the Japanese music industry. It's a shame, because apart from the national sound there's too much diversity in 'j-pop/j-rock' music for it to mean much anymore. I do agree with that. >_>

Any particular reason why? One would thing "Japanese rock" is a pretty reasonable tag, honestly better than 'rock' which can pretty much encompass anything with guitars as a main feature. Japanese rock has developed its own stylistic features; you may as well complain that Japanese food should be called food only.

I dislike this tag because it's not properly used. People are stupid and will tag everything japanese with J-rock, even electronic bands like Schwarz Stein and Soft Ballet. It's almost like the "visual kei" tag.

I hate all the [absolutely pointless] drama caused by this fucking tag. No matter how famous they are in Japan, Japanese bands are relatively unknown in the western music scene, so the term 'j-rock' almost makes sense if you are a very imaginative interpreter. What I don't get is why the fuck are you people arguing about this goddamn tag? It's a fucking TAG. [2]
