i would say it's a mixture out of a genre and the origin: rock out of japan - j-rock. i wouldn't condemn it, there is sure some crap in it, but also many good artist, if they'd came out of england they would sing the same stuff in english, so give 'em a try!

I can't discuss with someone who says "For some reason westerners feels that the japanese music isn't the same xD Dunno why though". Please, I'm westerner and I think japanese music is just that, music. I listen to some bands from argentina and I don't thag them as a-rock. And what the heck is that "Indies" thing? Lord, people just think rock from japan is something strange and stupid because of those nonsense terms. It's rock or rock, here in Japan or Brazil.

Some people are just too sensitive, Bomb Factory is still punk, L'Arc~en~Ciel is still rock. JRock is just useful to find and separate out music in a general sense, searching for new bands from Japan using genres like 'rock' gives a lot of American and British results, JRock eases the process. Unfortunately it's not that easy to find information from Japan in an english format, so we have to use inaccurate labels like JRock, but it works so why worry?

Polish metal is not a genre and britpop haves a distinctive sound. Some japanese rock bands might have a similar unique sound for "j-rock" but overall this is a generic term that says the band does any variant of rock and are japanese. They should put more specific tags on their bands to help potential listeners know how they sound like but something tells me that some of the fans of said "genre" don't know anything about music when I see a band like [artist]Schwarz Stein[/artist] with J-rock as one of their top tags.
