A great many of the " Smooth Jazz " artists have early and very deep backgrounds in the " True Jazz " genre of the purist / elitist. The musicians didn't create the handle of smooth jazz. The PR people did in order to create a name for a genre to promote and sell. Playing purist jazz only - wouldn't and didn't support the growth of the makers of BIG capital and very nice financial life styles. The evolution of what the public wants to listen to did / does not favor " pure jazz." Change the name of smooth jazz and I wouldn't give a .. I'm a HUGE FAN of " S.J. ". . . no shame whatever. Smooth Jazz is only a name for what the people like / love . . . By far , more people prefer this genre to " Pure Jazz " because of how the music speaks to them. Music is a tonal form of communicating. Soooo

Defining what is considered jazz or not to me is not all that hard. As a musician you know when there is a certain 'feel' to music that can only be described as 'jazzy' It's in the syncopation, it's in the feel and the attitude. All those labels are bull! If it's jazzy, it's jazz...period! I do agree that there seems to be this predominance of saxophone going on in smooth jazz and yes, I'm getting tired of Kenny G's endless 'doodling' as much as the next guy but there is cool smooth jazz music that focuses around acoustic guitar, piano or even a Hammond B3. Stop trying to label stuff and to neatly stash music away in a 'compartment'. The best music is the one that breaks out of the genre labels, breaks the barriers and refuses to be in the box in the first place. Amen!

I'm not here to bash anyone but it's true when people say Smooth Jazz really isn't jazz. I usually think of it like pop or R&B music with saxophone "vocals" lol! It's just this mush of "jazz instruments" with pop, new age, and R&B. Someone should make up a new name for it! The smooth part is right, but why JAZZ? It should be like "smooth music" or something. I even wonder if anyone really listens to it? Does anyone really sit down and listen to every note in an SJ song? I find it sad that a lot of people's reasons for liking it is because it makes good BG music (having sex, studying, trying to sleep). The funny thing is, I usually find myself getting stressed out by it. The "smoothing out" doesn't work on me xD

Pretty hilarious. I listened to Smooth Jazz radio as a little kid, and I LOVED it x'D And well, one day the station suddenly got taken off air. I started moving onto other things after that...years pass, I grow older...years later I hear a song playing somewhere and it seriously made me feel like the time I saw Barney for this first time again as a teenager: WTF? How could I like this??? o_o But yeah, little kids. You know little kids can like anything lol...
