  • Last.fm Sessions: Gold Fields

    24 May 2012, 10:52

After playing four shows at this years , Australia’s Gold Fields headed to New York City for shows in Brooklyn and Manhattan and of course, a session with us. I was blown away by the four-song EP that is currently out, but after seeing them live in Austin twice and then at The Mercury Lounge in NYC, I became a big-time fan. Until lead singer Mark Robert Fuller and guitarist/vocalist Vin Andanar hooked up with drummer Ryan D’Sylva, these songs started out as basic pop songs. Ryan was the one who turned them into the beat-driven gems they are today.

The debut album from Gold Fields was in its mixing stages when the band stopped by for this session, and we might get a late summer release according to the guys. Along with Rob Clifton and Luke Peldys, Mark, Vin and Ryan played all four songs from the EP that is out now in this session, followed by a chat with us.

  • Interview: Best Coast Discuss New Album “The Only Place"

    11 May 2012, 16:54

A long time ago, a huge tornado transported a young girl to a magical place where the people, animals and scenery looked vaguely familiar, but completely out of this world. After many adventures, the girl found herself wishing to return to the place where she belonged. She began clicking her heels and repeating one phrase: “There’s no place like home.” Whether or not Best Coast‘s Bethany Cosentino ever thought of herself as Dorothy, the parallels are clear. When the whirlwind created by her first album Crazy For You carried her far, far away from home, she began longing to return to California. “Home” is a dominant theme on Best Coast’s sophomore record, aptly titled The Only Place. Click through for our interview with Cosentino and partner in crime Bobb Bruno.

  • Last.fm Presents: Yuna live in studio

    10 May 2012, 15:14

Last.fm Presents recently welcomed Yuna to our studio to chat about and play songs from her brand new, self-titled album. There’s no denying the power of her sweet, subtle vocals. Yuna learned how to play the piano at the age of six, but it wasn’t until she was 19 when she picked up the guitar and started writing, that she would get real serious about music. She released her first EP in her homeland of Malaysia in 2008, and soon after was discovered on MySpace. The Fader label here in the U.S. then released her digital EP Decorate in March of last year. She worked on her debut album for the better part of 18 months, using the best producers and writers to her liking. Sessions were done in London, Los Angeles and Miami.

Yuna is joined by Bryn Roberts on keyboards for this session as they bring us three songs off the album and one song from the Decorate EP.

You’ll be forgiven if, upon first hearing the music of Scoundrels, you’ve assumed their from somewhere in the Deep South of the United States. Though the band members all hail from the UK and have cut their teeth in London’s rock scene, they’ve laid down some serious roots in the US as well, most notably in the bayous of Louisiana. Click through here to watch them play live in our studio, performing some tracks off their new Sexy Weekend EP plus a few other gems.

  • Last.fm Presents: O.A.R. acoustic performance in studio

    3 May 2012, 15:56

Following the release of the new album King by O.A.R., the band hit the road for their “Extended Stay Tour“. That tour hit smaller venues, multiple nights in selected cities, and it gave the band the opportunity to get back to an intimate, energetic setting. the fun part was they explored their catalog and played in-front of their longtime hardcore fans.

When they started the process for the album, they were in-between labels. Midway through, they signed with their new home, Wind-Up Records. The intimacy continued in our studio as Marc, Richard and Benj gave us a special acoustic performance, featuring three songs from King and my chat with them. Click-thru for the fun.

  • Last.fm Presents: Neon Trees Unplugged

    1 May 2012, 20:57

Since first coming by our studio in February of 2010, a month before the release of their debut album Habits, Neon Trees have never stopped doing what it takes to get heard and seen. They toured relentlessly across the globe, which made me wonder if Tyler Glenn, Chris Allen, Branden Campbell and Elaine Bradley would ever find time to start album #2. Tyler spent the last few years writing in hotels, airports and airplanes and eventually would plan time in that busy schedule to get the band together to begin working on what would become the sophomore album, Picture Show. In my interview with them at our studio just a few weeks ago, despite the success of the debut album, especially the single “Animal,” they still weren’t a household name. They used that to their advantage. As we waited two years for the follow-up album, outside of their fans anxiously waiting for the next batch of songs, they really didn’t have “eyes on them” which relieved the pressure of getting that next record out. But believe me, with Picture Show out, the Provo, UT band are truly relieved!

Bassist Branden Campbell put it best when he said that their music is “not defined to one musical genre”. “There’s something for everyone”. Settle in and watch Neon Trees play three songs from Picture Show, acoustically for the first time anywhere, from our studio in New York City. I then sit them down for a chat about the new album. You are gonna love this!
