2000 - 5 picks from my personal collection

Surprisingly solid year for music. I could have come up with quite a few different combinations of five albums but all of the below choices were pretty much nobrainers. Undeniable classics.

Electric Wizard - Dopethrone

Is this not the heaviest and most legendary Electric Wizard album? I cannot think of another album cover that personifies the music as perfectly. It is impossible to listen to Dopethrone on low volume. An all-time classic release for stoner and doom fans. Heaviest, slowest, most drugged up horror-inspired doom metal ever.

Pantera - Reinventing The Steel

Aptly named and energetic release from Pantera. What a shame it ended up being their last. Unrelentingly heavy and consistent throughout. The band's last album seems to be their most overlooked which is a shame as it includes some of their best work. Favorite tracks include "Revolution Is My Name", "Yesterday Don't Mean Shit" and the closing track "I'll Cast A Shadow". That last one is bittersweet - they did cast a shadow.

Thievery Corporation - The Mirror Conspiracy

Laid back acid jazz and dub of various sorts. "I rarely listen to this type of stuff but when I do, I prefer Thievery Corporation". Ok, so I'm no authority on this genre but I know what I like and can recognize quality when it slaps me in the face. I believe it was "Lebanese Blonde" that got me interested back in the day and made me buy the album. Never hurts to experiment and with Mirror Conspiracy you won't regret it.

Ulver - Perdition City

One of the finest electronic albums of all time comes from a black metal band. Who'd have thought? This is electronica and trip hop of a darker tone. Perdition City still includes acoustic instrumentation as well (saxophone, piano, drums) but they are mostly just added flavour. Give "Porn Piece or the Scars of Cold Kisses" a try and see how it feels.

Ween - White Pepper

Could be my favorite Ween album. The quality of songwriting is unquestionable and it's only fitting the record is named after two classic albums by the Beatles. White Pepper is a testament to the professional talent of the duo and probably their most mature release. Of course, that is not to say it does not feature their trademark brand of humor which is a universe of it's own. This is still a Ween album, it's just Ween at their very best.
