I've never taken the trouble to listen to heavy metal music, but I have a sneaking suspicion it's not really something for me. But we will just see about that when heavy metal shows up in the list… For now, I'll have to be satisfied with Blue Cheer's debut album 'Vincebus Eruptum', known as one of the pioneers of heavy metal.
Is this album that heavy? No.
Is it heavier than what we have heard already in this list? Yes. (Although The Monks sometimes came close)
My sneaky suspicion about heavy music is not really confirmed with this album because it is great! It doesn't sound perfect, but it sounds exciting. The band is clearly having fun, and that makes this album a serious rush from beginning to end.
The album starts with a cover of Summertime Blues which is fantastic: a perfect combination of melody and some heavier drum and guitar work (and it has a great intro!). The same is true for Rock Me Baby that starts off like the Otis Redding version (with slightly more pronounced drums), but earns its heavy metal credits at the end. And of course there are the songs where the "heavy metal jamming" takes the lead. Parchment Farm is exceptional (the silence in the middle!), and so is Second Time Around.
Yipsee, can't say much about this album except that it's pretty great. Full of energy, raw,… and "jumping around head banging" fun!
