  • Opposites Day: Short pretty songs.

    15 Ara 2007, 23:43

I realized I had dedicated two entire journal posts to my favorite music but it's all five minutes plus, so why not show a little love for the short-yet-great stuff?

Here are a few of my faves-

    1. "As Smart as Geek is Chic Right Now" by Say Hi to Your Mom. [1:03] Really weird. Really freaking awesome. :3

    2. "We Put a Pearl in the Ground" by St. Vincent. [1:10] Gorrrrrgeous piano.

    3. "End of the Movie" by Cake. [1:52] The flute part- the bit that sounds Gaelic- gets me every time. And the lyrics are so damn catchy despite the negativity. :P

    4. "I Want You So Hard (Boy's Bad News)" by Eagles of Death Metal. [1:57] There are no words for how insane cool this band is. Or this song. <333

    5. "The Ballad of Queen Bee and Baby Duck" by Eagles of Death Metal. [1:59] For description of wonderousness, see above. ;]

    6. "Dance Music" by The Mountain Goats. [1:59] Oh John Dardenelle. You're amazing. That is all. <3

    7. "Nature of the Experiment" by Tokyo Police Club. [2:04] "It's my impeccable disorder/where I keep on falling for her". Awww.

    8. "Chocolate, Raspberry, Lemon, and Lime" by Muscles. [2:16] Sweet baby jesus, this song is catchy and AMAZING. "I wish that I could keep you in my pocket/so I could play with you all the tiiiiiime!" Eee! <3

    9. "Going to Georgia" by The Mountain Goats. [2:17] Once again: oh I love you John Dardenelle, please keep making me always happy!

    10. "Dancing Shoes" by Arctic Monkeys. [2:21] "Get on your dancing shoes/you sexy little swiiiine!"

    11. "Raindrops" by Regina Spektor. [2:40] Gorgeous piano. And it's so soft and pretty and cute you just want to HUG EVERYONE.

    12. "Jellycones" by The Unicorns. [2:43] Jelly! Jelllyyy!

    13. "Middle of the Hill" by Josh Pyke. [2:44] The first sentence of this song is genius. How on earth do you say so much in ONE line?

    14. "Measuring Cups" by Andrew Bird. [2:51] This guy's voice makes me so happy and his lyrics make me feel SUPAR SMART.

    15. "So Sick (Neyo Cover)" by Patrick Stump. [2:58] Fall Out Boy is my guilty pleasure band, cause I know it's shitty music, but I can't help loving the tasty vindictive lyrics. However my love for Patrick Stump's voice is NOT guilty. It is amazing. This is an awesome cover. Sweet baby jesus it's awesome. I want to tell everyone Patrick is awesome and his voice is chocolate and sex and teddy bears. All of this AT ONCE!

  • Long pretty songs, part 2. :3

    15 Ara 2007, 23:18

Ironically enough, right after I wrote that last list of long songs that I couldn't get enough of, I found a bunch more that were pretty much equally awesome. :P

So welcome to round two, I guess?

    1. "Sleep" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor [23:17] You'd never think one of your favorite songs would begin with an old guy talking about Coney Island when he was a boy, but hey, surprises are fun, huh? Anyway, this song is brilliant and I have no idea what instrument it is [that sounds a bit like an electric guitar] but it's awesome.

    2. "The Dead Flag Blues" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor [16:27] I gotta admit I like this better than "Sleep," mainly for the opening monologue. But the very ending is also amazing. Like sunshine after an apocalypse which, really, it's supposed to be.

    3. "When David Heard" by Eric Whitacre. [15:00] My new favorite Whitacre song. It's in minimalist style and it takes brilliant advantage of silence- I know, sounds retarded, but I truly mean it. The parts where it finally crescendos up to full volume are just- guhh. No words.

    4. "The Stars are Projectors" by Modest Mouse. [8:47] Jesus, what an awesome line. "- and the stars are projectors, yeah- projecting our lives down to this planet Earth." <333

    5. "You Already Did" by Russian Circles. [8:14] Since there aren't any lyrics to this, the title just fascinates the hell out of me.

    6. "Njosnavelin (Nothing Song) by Sigur Ros. [8:07] So incredibly calming, soothing, etc. etc.

    7. "Tonto" by Battles. [7:43] This song makes me want to dance around like a little moron. I love it. :3

    8. "Buildings Began to Stretch Wide Across the Sky, and the Air is Filled with a Reddish Glow" by Red Sparowes. [7:23] Damn, what a title :P This song feels so BIG at the beginning, then it falls down, and swells back up again. It's pretty much magic. Yeah.

    9. "32 Flavors" by Ani DiFranco. [6:06] I know I have a stupid soft spot for this girl's music, but the lyrics to this song are freaking brilliant and cheeky and guhh. <33 Ani.

    10. "Chemo Limo" by Regina Spektor. [6:04] The piano in this song is gorgeous. The lyrics in the part about the limo- Sophie listening to BBC- that gets me. I don't know why. And the contrast between the beginning and the "No thank you, no thank you" part is AWESOME.

    11. "Blame it on the Tetons" by Modest Mouse. [5:24] "If you find a way out/Oh, would you just let me know how?" Looove. Oh and: "Everyone's an ocean drowning/With no one really to show how"

    12. "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" by Colin Hay. [5:23] Really sad. Really pretty. I've loved this song forever and never once have I gotten sick of it.

    13. "Rebellion (Lies)" by Arcade Fire. [5:10] God, this song is catchy and it's so bouncy. "Sleeping is giving in/No matter what the time is/Sleeping is giving in/So lift those heavy eyelids."

    14. "Arcadia" by Apparat. [5:10] Intellitechno. Really catchy but smart, too.

So there you have it. You should look some [or you know, all] of this up, cause it's amazing times a million.

  • long pretty songs

    29 Eyl 2007, 07:09

I have this soft spot for songs that are both...
    1) really gorgeous
    2) long [well, 5 min. plus]
...so here you have my 10 favorites. enjoy :3

    --

    1. The Trapeze Swinger- Iron and Wine [9:31] Oh, what can I say that doesn't just take away from how gorgeous it is? Nearly 10 minutes of amazing.

    2. Cloudburst- Eric Whitacre [8:22] Choral piece with some cool, weird instrumentals too. The most amazing dissonant chords. I adore everything Whitacre really.

    3. Layla- Derek and the Dominoes [7:03] Okay, pretty different from everything else on this list, but I grew up with this song and I bet the nostalgic feel goes for a lot of other people too. It's timeless.

    4. Hallelujah- Jeff Buckley [6:55] There are a million covers of this song, but Buckley's has always been my favorite. All the Biblical references and that beautiful guitar. Almost overpoweringly good.

    5. Come On! Feel the Illinoise! - Sufjan Stevens [6:47] Delightfully weird, bouncy, amazing. The Carl Sandburg bit always makes me sit there like I'm in a trance just admiring, like who on earth could write lyrics that surreal?

    6. i thank You God for most this amazing day - Eric Whitacre [5:51] I know, another Whitacre, but this one's jaw-dropping mind-numbing amazing too :P

    7. Dramamine - Modest Mouse [5:42] Different from the others in that it's less the lyrics that get me, but that guitar hook. It's repetitive yet earthy and bittersweet and just, you know. Good. :]

    8. Loveology - Regina Spektor [5:38] Oh god, what's not to love? It's Regina Spektor.

    9. I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood - 65daysofstatic[5:27] Completely instrumental, weird math rock that just goes everywhere. Probably one of the stranger things on this list, still accessible though.

    10. The Scientist- Coldplay [5:11] The piano always makes me sad. The words always make me sad. I'm not even a sad person, I don't get this pattern :P nevertheless, Chris's voice is all smooth and sweet and good.

  • to keep things organized in my head

    29 Eyl 2007, 06:48

to keep the music section of my head as organized as it could be [I'm not feeling too optimistic but help me cross my fingers yeah? :3]

I'll just be using this for various music-related stuff. the stuff I love- artists, songs- maybe the occasional obnoxious rant I'm sure people have heard enough of those, if anybody ends up reading this journal, just skip those ranting things. you have heard them before.
