Thx for the hint! Without it I perhaps would have needed months before recognizing SLs genius. I like their chaotic yet still melodious approach as in Avalanche Rides or - yep! - Misanthrope Puppet, which musically seen isn't misanthropic at all^^

As far as I’m concerned Jordison’s a drug-addict little person who actually beat up this chick I used to talk to who dated him for several years. He’s got problems. For me, it’s really important that I’m supporting a certain caliber person as well as musician. To me music’s about making an emotional investment and I’ll always consider longevity to be a key factor when determining whether someone is great. Out of my Top 30 artists I’ve seen probably 25 of them live and met roughly the same amount. I’ve befriended or gotten to know probably 12-14 of those artists, as well. Growing up, I was treated well and a lot of these bands have let me hang out with them, after gigs and go out on the road to hang out for several days. I’ve lost some friends by speaking my mind when it comes to everyone’s work but most have seemed to respect me more for doing that.

I still say Lamb of God are way, way overrated. Neither of those guitar players compares to a Dimebag and the fact that Randy Blythe cannot sing at all is why L.O.G. will always be several notches beneath someone like a Pantera. I don't really pay attention to genres…my goal is always to just find the most electrifying, dynamic and potent artist in whatever I’m listening to. I try really hard to not listen to bands that do essentially the same thing. I’m 25, so I was sick of Slipknot by the time “Iowa” dropped. They’re an OK band but they don’t write songs that impress me or that I’d consider timeless. I’ll just always be way more into a band like Nothingface because songs like “For All the Sin“, “Villains”, “Blue Skin”, “Breathe Out” and “Murder Is Masturbation” will always rule! That was the stuff that got me through the painful years. I got 2-3 of my closest friends into NF in HS and we were ready to basically ‘throw down’ with the kids we considered brainwashed & into Slipknot.

Well, it's not as if those 2 artists (Tool/Patton) are linked or share a whole lot in common. I got really into Patton when I was 18, if I remember correctly. Think he's one of the most talented vocalists of all-time but I'm not into Fantomas or Mr. Bungle, really. I think it's cool that FNM are have a new record coming out in May, hope it's good. Psychedelic? Eh... I don't hate it but it's not a genre I go out of my way to listen to. I'll have to check out Soen's second album... the first wasn't bad, listened to it a couple of times. I saw FTM 4 or 5 times live and they were one of the best live bands that I've ever seen. FTM's quirky but I think that stuff's really innovative and super goddamn heavy + Darroh's a special vocalist, imo. Now you have bands like Nothing More trying to be the next FTM. I'll have to checkout Red... really don't know much by them.

Tool’s one of those bands that are just “weird for the sake of being weird” and I’ve heard stories about how little they care about their fans and how pompous they are. I got into the band Fair to Midland years ago and even though they’re on hiatus/broken-up… I think those guys are sicker than Tool or someone like System of a Down could ever be. Transitional bands are important, no doubt. I’m always looking for new stuff to get into but I can definitely feel my age creeping in. The thing I value more than anything, at this point is longevity… and I firmly believe that bands are only as good as their singer. I don’t hear many vocalists like Mike Patton, Phil Anselmo or Bjorn Strid, without great vocals to me; songs aren’t memorable and years down the road it’s extremely forgettable. Try and find stuff that you know you’ll love 10, 20 years from now...

Sorry for taking so long to respond this time. Agreed 100% about ’Euro-metal’ being vastly superior to American metal. Bands like Killswitch and L.O.G. are just lame to me and the reason we cut them down is because I can find 10 kids who claim to be ‘metal-heads’ that know stuff by KSE before I find even 3 who know anything about Soilwork. That just bothers me. As far as Slipknot goes… to me their image is why they’ve remained so popular. Bands that came out before them like Nothingface will always be so much better, in my opinion. I liked a couple tracks on Slipknot’s first album when it came out but Iowa isn’t the ’metal masterpiece’ that so many people think. The truth about Slipknot is that they’re not very talented song-writers (so many of their parts are terrible, all their albums have so much filler) and Jordison will always be one of the most overrated drummers of all-time, imo.

God dammit. My response never went through. Extremists of any sort are lacking in the brain area. Mmmm Sure the conservatives have Fox news, but liberals will gladly go out into public and make themselves look like they have an IQ of 80 and EQ (emotion) of 150. The Tea Party is nothing more than pissy conservatives who think they are progressive. They really aren't doing that much damage, especially now that they are out of the spotlight. Liberals want too much government, conservatives are too isolationist. Maybe it's just time to start over. Man I remember the days when Ron Paul wasn't a republican, those were the days! Penn Jilleate? I've removed myself from politics, so I admit idk who that is. Ok thats not an awful song, but Angra is a lot better than that! I haven't heard Ozric Tentacles mentioned in a looooooooong time. Their discography is stupid big. I have it in my library. 1 day, 12 hours, 12 minutes and 57 seconds.

Oriental scales have always sounded lightly like latin music, but with a heavy eastern sound (duh). So creating Dance Metal would be downright sexy and fun (ballroom, tango, salsa styles, not grinding and club dancing). Wonderwall here I come. I see a lot of middle eastern men with the Caterpillar. I wonder if I should grow one. Lol.

Thats one of the reasons I can't stand liberals, but a lot of liberals tend to think just with their emotions and just throw intelligence out the window. Liberals and Conservatives are pretty much 2 sides of the same coin, so in the long run they end up achieving the same goals. If anything I'm a liberatarian. Socially liberal, financially conservative. I'd say I'm a humanist as well. Which is one of the big reasons why I can't stand Feminism. Feminists want all the "benefits" that men have, but they don't want the repercussions that men also have to face. You don't see women voting to make it so women are put on deathrow, do ya (a bit extreme, but serves the point)? Modern Journalism is nothing but advertisement for our fascist government. Yes, by definition the US is a Fascist country. Ie: The merging of corporate and state power. I could never get into Dragonforce because they're absolutely awful live. Some songs are decent, but they do blend together after a while.

Thats fucking awesome! You could always use a crappy smart phone mic, lol! Work on breathing and I'm sure you could do them fully for periods at a time. In The Woods... was avant garde at the time. Now they just sound like early prog metal progenitors. I've heard of the band, but haven't listened to their stuff yet. I'll get on it. Liberals.... ugh. Conservatives suck dick too, but liberals, they really are a special kind of stupid. They support racism, sexism and all that shit without even fuckin knowing it. I used to be extremely political myself, but I've gotten out of it, for the most part, just because I need to work on myself and my problems. Though occasionally theres things I just have to share and get into. Atleast Orphaned Land could be oriental dance metal with how cheesy they sometimes sound, but they are a good kind of cheesy. Not like Dragonforce influenced power metal cheesy. I forgot how awesome Ukrainian Black metal is.

Omg dat hair! Hahaha. Makes me miss my shoulder length hair.. Thats an awesome cover, though your lows sound like me "evil whisper" vox. Hahaha. I honestly never understood how they got Devin Townsend to produce Dichotomy, since he explicitly hates all forms of religion. Their music is good, but I completely agree on their lyrics. Archaic garbage from an archaic mind. Back in the day, Christianity at its worst did rival Islam. I guess Muslims feel it's time for their "crusade." But I gotta give it to ISIS, they certainly know how to make a decapitation look good. Like shit, they produced the fuck out of their videos. At first I thought "Am I watching a trailer for some epic as fuck movie, or am I watching an execution?" Yeah, they're pretty brave. Hopefully they won't get fucked the Middle East finally explodes.. and it will. Heart of Ages isn't like their second and third album. It's avant garde black metal, if you're familiar with Agalloch, I'm sure you'll recognize ITW's influence.

While Black Metal was unproduced or poorly produced due to lack of funds, it kind of has become the staple, and I've always loved the atmosphere the music has. Why the fuck was he blamed? Ugh thats just a bit ridiculous. You should totally post a video of your growls, lets hear that shit! Bahaha I just imagined Billy Joel doing prog rock with that description. Billy Joel/ Steven Wilson battle of the century! lmao. Yeah..... Thats the thing I really fucking hate aboot Neal Morse. He is a fantastic musician and songwriter, but I can't stand the lyrics. It's like mixing prog rock with generic as fuck christian rock. Though the Light is one of the few non-cringeworthy NM era albums. OL is a cool band, though a bit silly, but noble at the same time. I've never ever heard anyone compare Nightingale to ITW...'s wut? Now Metal Jefferson Airplane, Id get. Just listen to Heart of Ages. The whole album >:) We are metal fans we don't listen to one song, we listen to all of it.

I love black metal, do you think I give a fuck aboot production? Lol! Though there are times where even I complain about production (Devin Townsend-Physicist). He went to prison? Was he too much of a hardcore redneck? Any type of singing has to mostly be stomach/diaphragm so you don't hurt it, but I just don't know how to get a growling sound out with diaphragm and not just throat. I just sound like I'm full of too much air or I'm doing an evil whisper. I can understand why SW can bore people. I used to listen to him 24/7, but I just got bored of his stuff, for the most part. Speaking of SB, SB with or without Neal Morse? The music is great with Morse, but too much Jesus for me. Yeah... like I said Mike is more focused on pissing off his fans because they're "too closed-minded" vs actually writing decent songs. Also I saw In the Woods on another shout, Heart of Ages is one of the best BM albums ever. Omnio and SIS are some of the best avant garde metal albums.

I have a strong voice when my voice is actually in shape! Lol. I was the guy in my choir that belted the fuck out of the high C, maybe not the most gracefully, but I could hit that note. I just don't know how to growl without fucking up my singing voice. Worried about liking PF? Wrong conversation? Yeah thats definitely true. I could never get into LoG, but I always hear great things about them. Whats a great album to start with? Anaal Nathrakh could try to do that. They already do an awesome job with Grind and Black Metal, why not make a side project as grind and disco? Bahaha that would be epic. The problem with Mikael is all he cares about now is fighting with his fans, saying we're all closed-minded, but in reality, his songwriting has been lacking. Watershed was awesome, Heritage wasn't bad either ( though it should've been a solo album), but Pale Communion.. god dammit.. the songwriting just pisses me off. It isn't proggy, it's just sloppy.

Agreed on there hopefully being a movement of intelligent rock bands moving forward... To me it's all about big-time hooks and being able to pull off incredibly dynamic changes. (Like time-shifts that also sound as though they're like a genre-shift) ..Those parts must be amazing, to me. (Not sure if you’ve ever heard of the group XTC, but their records “Skylarking” and “Oranges & Lemons” are 2 of my favorites… new wave with a surprisingly talented guitar-player and an excellent bass player. That was the mid and late 80’s but those are albums that sound great, to me!)

When it comes to discovering music… I’ve usually found about 2 to 3 artists per year for the last decade… that have really impacted me! The older I get, the less I believe that will happen. It’s cool to support local and independent artists but I’m someone who gets very invested in bands and the most disappointing feeling to me is getting stoked about a project that never even completes an album or anything. That’s happened to me at least 5 times. I don’t pay attention to genres like metal core, or nu-metal… I think those terms are over-used and kind of unsophisticated. So someone who doesn’t like metal can tell me “Soilwork is the same thing as Killswitch Engage” and comments like that really irritate me, lol. I’m the type of person that other people who don’t appreciate music anywhere near as much, usually have a very difficult time, defining me, I guess. lol

Disarmonia is killer too but it’s incredibly dark music, to me. I was borderline obsessed with them, years ago but it’s been about 5 years since the last album release and that tends to force me to listen to artists who’ve shown more activity since then or that I’ve recently just discovered or rediscovered. But yeah, I will sing along to songs for fun. I’m more into melodies than anything… I obviously like some music that has some guttural vocals going on but ultimately I think it’s a pretty forgettable vocal-style, if you ask me... (I know Peter who was in Soilwork digs Katatonia and that they’re Swedish, been meaning to check them out, again.) Trivium’s always been a band I just never could listen to. Tool, I respect but honestly at this point… the most ‘unpredictable’ thing they could do would be to write a ‘normal’ album of really well-crafted, 4 and 5 minute songs. I’m not a fan being progressive, simply for the sake of being progressive, if that makes sense.

I can definitely relate to what you’re saying about feeling fortunate to have been born when you are. I know what you mean by just innately preferring the tones and production styles of the 90’s and today. I’ve had several arguments with my father about this, over the years lol. I know what my ears naturally prefer just a smooth and really clear mix. Sounds like an interesting project, I’ll have to check it out more. Bjorn is definitely one of my biggest inspirations as far as musicians go. I think I mentioned the experience I had actually meeting and hanging out with him (4 times…) 2 years ago while Soilwork was on tour in the States and it was basically life-changing. He’s just a very humble and unbelievably talented person...

it changes enough to be interesting. Oh nice! I've never been able to find a CiC cd or vinyl anywhere here in California. Evil Disco.. that needs to be an actual genre. Sure avant garde metal has a lot of it, but evil disco should be a thing outside of metal too. True Satanic Disco FTW! Orchid and Morningrise are definitely black metal, but with Death vocals. The lyrics are super Black Metal and they're a bit more atmospheric in a gritty way, compared to MAYH and above. You aren't crazy, atleast not in the aspect of thinking Morningrise is black metal.

The only reason I've had time now, is because I got tonsilitus and I had to stay in.. Masstaden is a masterpiece, no ifs ands or buts. I love melodic vocals; I can't stand the tone though. Extremely nasally and what I've heard reminds me too much of Deathcore and Metalcore vocals, which I can't stand or pop-punk vocals/emo vocals. PL have been, but in a live show, they put a lot of energy into their music, especially their older, atmospheric stuff. Don't worry neither Primus nor Les Claypool have hooked me. I just know they both have awesome bass. Have you ever listened to his SYL stuff, that definitely has what you're looking for, but it does have a bit less experimentation. Honestly, thats what I love about Devin. I've always loved when artists have a certain melody or sound that they always have around on a song or two, but they keep changing it for every song. Trying to get the best sound out of that melody. It doesn't sound like he lacks any creativity, because....

The crowd-thing was something I never focused on when I was younger but just as I’ve gotten older, I’ve begun to really think about it more. I’m no longer a big fan but I went to some events/shows for the band 311 and that’s the closest I’ve come to being around folks who I think to some degree are brainwashed. It’s cool that they love their band… but I’ve found a lot of people just kind of blindly follow whatever the band does and believes it to be great music, regardless. Those were fans that didn’t seem to have much of an ear for anything else, which kind of was bizarre to me. I have favorite songs that I still don’t know all the words to. To me it’s always been the final ‘piece of the puzzle’ as obviously vocals are the final thing to be recorded, musically. My main fascination with music is centers mostly all around melody and rhythm. And the ways you can combine the two elements together, to make something really intense, beautiful and unique, I guess.

As long as you’re enjoying the music you’re into, as much as possible. I think that’s a great position to be in. I think my preference for shorter songs is due to the fact that I like big-vocal melodies as kind of a cornerstone and those (let‘s just say TEND) to be featured in songs that rarely are over 5 minutes. One of my favorite singers is Bjorn Strid of Soilwork because I think he manages to write choruses that are different from anything he’s done previously. But those hooks are definitely a staple of the band’s sound and along with the really clever, creative blues-riffing. I think that band’s work’s just gotten better on the last 2 releases. I’d say they’re the one current band who best incorporates all of my favorite elements, as far as heavy music goes...

I’ll have to look into him. And yeah, I just love a huge guitar sound for heavy music. My earliest fond memories of music are stuff like Pantera, Prong, Trouble and those bands always had a really distinctive heavy tone, imo. But my main peeve is actually just with guys who become disillusioned in the music business and then actually become bitter and angry towards other artists (quick to dismiss their work and talk shit about anyone and everyone) I know people who are so caught up in worrying about the direction of their own precious little band, that they lose sight of everything else. To me, I just think that’s an unhealthy attitude and can be potentially detrimental mindset that, capable of actually stunting a person‘s own artistic growth. Agreed with your viewpoint on major-label artists. I think certain other people get very caught up in the marketing and stuff, but really to me, it’s all about the songs, at the end of the day.
