1. After the Burial - Rareform: I swear, AtB are re-inventing the way the guitar is played. Since switching over to 8-strings, their breakdowns have become heavier (not to mention more mind-boggling) and they melodic parts simply more melodic. Close battle for AoTY, but my fav.
2. The Faceless - Planetary Duality: The AoTY for me could've gone either way between the top two. The Faceless improved on their already excellent musicianship and just sheer talent. Excellent technical and unique album. Received many plays from me. Definitely NOT deathcore; they've moved headfirst into the realm of Progressive/Tech. Death Metal.
3. Whitechapel - This Is Exile: If nothing else, the sheer brutality of this album makes it a winner, IMO. Far better than their debut and just a fantastic, fun album.
4. Opeth - Watershed: My favorite band of all time, and although this was a good album I must say I am a bit disappointed (and it's not simply due to the lack of growls). However good it may be, to me it just feels like it's missing something.
5. Underoath - Lost in the Sound of Separation: I know I may get some slack for adding them on the list, but since I have heard this album (my first UO experience, btw), I must say I feel they are underrated as musicians. Very diverse and far from boring album; as well as one of my favs.
