Wow, I had no idea Gotti did horrorcore at some point of his career. For some reason it’s really weird for me to imagine him rapping about stuff like that. But I agree with the “staying true to his roots” part, from what I can tell he’s not the greatest lyricist but his music comes off as really heartfelt. And that’s at least as important imo. And I like the more melodic, synth-based beats as well! / Haha yeah, I watched the video with his performance and tbh that shit was hard to watch. I mean, I’m a huge fan of his music but he simply can’t sing. The problem with Kanye is that he always talks about wanting to be “this generation’s Jimi Hendrix” or “the next Ralph Lauren” without actually having an idea what that means exactly. You know, sometimes I think he might be slightly autistic and I don’t mean it as an insult. Have you seen the “YOU AIN’T GOT THE ANSWERS SWAY” interview? It’s as if he sometimes doesn’t really know how to express himself and starts lashing out.

“I Am” is his best one? I’ll check it out then because I have never really listened to Gotti besides a song here and there. / Ah, well that’s understandable. It took a while for me to get into his music because of that. And I’ve always liked him more as a producer then a rapper, lyrically he’s average at best, I mean look at “Runaway”, Pusha raps circles around him. Imo the thing with Kanye is that he’s just really inconsistent, one moment he can spit great, heartfelt lyrics (e.g. “Family Business” which is one of my favorite songs of all time because it’s so positive), then he says the dumbest shit imaginable (most of “Yeezus”). As far as his antics and public persona go, I don’t really take it seriously and try to see it as entertainment lol. His delusions of grandeur seem to have gotten worse lately though

I’m glad you like it and it’s true that it’s a different style for him. Then again, I don’t think we’ll have to worry about him getting too similar to Kendrick, his music is much more gritty and “street” than Kendrick and he’s much closer to Freddie Gibbs stylistically than anybody from TDE (I hope it stays that way). / Yeah, me too! I’ve listened to DS2 in its entirety four times already and I can’t seem to get tired of it. I prefer Future’s mixtapes to his albums as well because I don’t like his radio-friendly songs, they are too cheesy for my taste. Luckily DS2 is pretty much nothing but trap bangers, I love the production (though a beat by Mike Will would have been nice). What are your favorite songs? So far mine are “I Serve The Base”, “Stick Talk”, “Rich Sex” and “Kno The Meaning”.

Wow, tbh I’m surprised to learn that Chamillionaire still has a career lol. But seriously, he may still have it in him to release a good album. Look at D’Angelo for example, he released a new album after a 14 year hiatus and it was very good. A new Z-Ro album would be cool, that’s true. Yo Gotti released a new mixtape this year, titled “Concealed”, you might give it a listen if you haven’t already. / Really? What don’t you like about his albums after that (not talking shit, I’m genuinely interested)? Actually I wasn't always a fan of him but at some point his music eventually "clicked" with me, similar to Drake and Future.

Yeah man, I definitely agree, I used to hate autotune because of artists like T-Pain! It really depends on the artist imo, i.e. it really suits Future but it doesn't suit Chief Keef at all imo. / True, it's been a long time since he released a new project. Speaking of which, have you listened to his new song "Gumbo"? It's pretty good, I really like the chill, mellow beat! / Yeah, I agree, I think Future really excels on those darker, hard-hitting beats of Metro Boomin and 808 Mafia, his more recent material turned me into a fan. My reaction to “Parachute” was pretty much the same lol. Btw, you need to check out DS2 man, I’ve already listened to it twice, which is something I rarely do with a new album! It’s really really good, I can’t believe how consistent Future has been this year!

As for albums I expect the most: The Weeknd’s new album (I hope it’s gonna be better than Kiss Land), Kanye’s SWISH (though I have a feeling that it may end up mediocre), Freddie Gibbs’ new project ( I can’t remember whether he planned to release a mixtape or an album), “Death Magic” by HEALTH and Migos’ “YRN”, from the top of my head. I’m sure I forgot some lol. What about you?

Ah, I see. Well, I think it’s just a matter of time before the current trend of trap-influenced beats will subside, at least in the mainstream. I don’t know if it’s just me, but recently many popular rappers have incorporated (autotuned) singing in their music, which is something I don’t really like. / Haha, nothing wrong with that. ESGN has a couple of great bangers and I love the song he did with Jay Rock. I’ve always thought him and Gibbs should do a collab album one day, shit would be hard. / Oh okay, well the only “new” song is “Blow A Bag” (“News Or Somethn” won’t be part of the album) and it’s amazing imo. I have a feeling DS2 will continue the darker mood of Monster or 56 Nights, which would be great since I prefer Future’s trap bangers over his more melodic “Dirty Sprite 1”-era songs. I can’t wait for the release tomorrow!

Interesting thought, what artists do you have in mind? I could also see a boom-bap revival in the mainstream with a return of soul and jazz samples like Kendrick did on TPAB. / Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised about that unfortunately. I’ve heard of Suga Free but I’ve only listened to the song he did with Q for Oxymoron and a couple of tracks with DJ Quik. Me too, I really like the vibe of his music, reminds me of driving around on a summer night (as corny as it sounds lol). / Definitely, I’m looking forward to Gibbs’ new album. I hope he’ll deliver because for better or worse the expectations will be pretty high after “Pinata”. / How do you like Future btw man? Have you listened to his recent singles (“News Or Somethn” and “Blow a Bag”)? He’s been on fire lately, every project he has released so far was amazing. 2015 is gonna be his year!

Exactly, man! I wouldn’t be suprised if there was a fad of German or French trap music in a 2 or 3 years when most American artists will probably have moved on to a different style lol. / I haven’t listened to that tape but if it’s good I’m gonna check it out. And you’re right, he had his chance when he had a little hype but now he’s done. I like your comparison with Papoose i.e. Nipsey Hussle is a good rapper that is able to make good songs but not an entire cohesive project, just like him. And I know 100, I’ve listened to Ice Cold Perm and IVRY, they’re both pretty good mixtapes. In a way he reminds me of a younger Too Short. / What!? Holy shit, Gangsta Gibbs and Wop on one track! Man that’s amazing news, both of my favorite rappers are finally doing a track together! I can’t wait to see how it turns out, I bet the track will be hard as hell!

Yeah, many German rappers are like that as well. I think I mentioned this a while ago but many fans as well as the artists seem to view subject matter as a strict conscious/gangster-rap dichotomy. / Yeah, I can see where you’re coming from, they all sound pretty similar. What do you think of Nipsey Hussle? I have only listened to his “Marathon” mixtapes but I think he’s solid if you’re in the mood for his music. He is pretty one dimensional however i.e. he only raps about his struggles of “making it” as a rapper (though he still isn’t very popular afaik) but his songs can be pretty motivating imo. / The Snoop feature surprised me as well but I really like the song, I would love to know who produced it but I haven’t found any producer credit for this particular song; it was probably C4, I guess. Btw “I Get So High”’s hook cracked me up, Gucci must have been high as a kite when he recorded the song lol

Me too, they have been collaborating with quite a few artists that don’t really suit their style lately. Though I agree that Paz’s solo albums are generally solid, I still really like the track he did with Clipse from Season Of The Assassin. I was definitely surprised by the collab but the song goes hard (“still pushin’ bass/base like an African drum” or something like that haha)! / That’s true, Waka’s music wouldn’t be the same without Lex Luger or 808 Mafia, his beat selection is carrying him! / Sounds cool, I’m gonna check it out this weeknd when I have a little more time to properly digest it. I’m not really into most of these guys as well, Problem and Dom Kennedy are really boring and one dimensional to me for instance, but I like YG as well. I figured he was a one hit wonder but I ended up really liking My Krazy Life! / Have you listened to Guwop’s new tape? How did you like it?

Exactly, I’ve recently listened to some new tracks by JMT & AOTP and they seemed really formulaic. Even their own fans in the comments said that they basically have been making the same song for years (like anything that was released after Servants In Heaven, Kings In Hell). And the piano and violin thing is really true, same goes for German rappers lol. / That’s cool, you know I still like JMT’s Violent By Design and their really early tracks for the production, those are some of the most unique beats I’ve ever heard. And I hope I’m not sounding too negative, of course it’s perfectly fine to listen to them. For instance I like quite a few tracks by Fredo Santana but mostly because of the beat since he can’t rap for shit. / Lol that’s true and especially for German rappers! / How did you like Vince Staples’ new album?

No problem man, I’m glad you enjoy it! Only 5 bucks?! That’s a great deal! If you liked “What’s Going On”, you might also like “Let’s Get It On”, I’m sure you know the title track since it has been in so many movies! The atmosphere is different on this album though, it’s mostly love songs but it’s great if you’re in that kind of mood lol. / Haha, yeah, shame on me! I mostly listened to lots of oldschool rap and artists from the Philly underground scene like Jedi Mind Tricks, AOTP and stuff like that. But at some point I was just tired of all the negativity, the conspiracy theory bullshit and ESPECIALLY the fanbase. Many of those people are really immature and radiate nothing but negativity. But even at that time I already thought Immortal Technique was trash lol. / Yeah, the lyrics are pretty dumb but it’s intentionally, I think I’ve heard that the guy wanted to satirize hip hop clichés with this project.

Sure, have fun listening to it! And American Gangster is definitely worth watching. It’s not the greatest movie ever made but Denzel Washington is great in it, he really carries the movie! / Interesting, I got into Jeezy’s music at around the same time (I think the first song I ever consciously heard by him was “White Girl” with USDA). Unfortunately I was still in my teenage backpacker phase so I couldn’t appreciate it like I do now lol. / Haha, holy shit, a guy in a Spongebob suit rapping about moving bricks!? Now I have seen everything, I had no idea this guy existed! Btw not to turn this into a rant but that beat is the perfect example why I don’t like (modern) German producers; it’s always basic synth beats that went out of style ten years ago.

Cool, I’m glad you like it. If you’re interested check out the rest of the album, it really does sound like it could be the soundtrack for a gangster movie. It has always reminded me a little of American Gangster with Denzel Washington. I haven’t seen Cadillac Records yet but it sure looks interesting, seems like I have to watch it some time. / I didn’t know there was a video for “Holy Ghost” but you’re right, it’s cool, I like the lighting and the slo-mo shots of the car. Actually I always imagined a Rolls driving at night when I listened to the song lol. / Yeah, it’s a shame that they couldn’t work it out, Jeezy and Gucci would have made some amazing tracks together! What do you think of Jeezy’s It’s Tha World mixtape?

Oh, so you were talking about late 90s / early 2000s RnB, right? I thought you meant the Motown stuff lol. If you want to get into some of the classics I’d recommend Marvin Gaye’s album “What’s Going On” as a start, you may know this song from the sample from Scarface’s “A Minute To Pray, A Second To Die”: That was actually how I discovered it, I always wanted to know where the sample came from because I liked it so much and now it has become one of my favorite songs! / That’s true, I think Jeezy used to make great music up until like 2008, 2009. Everything that came after that was really mediocre though I have to say I liked “Seen It All” as well, especially “Holy Ghost” has become one of my favorite Jeezy songs. The beat is incredible and I like the concept of the song being about a Rolls Royce Ghost instead of the religious one lol.

Yeah, I’m not too much into modern RnB either but I like Frank Ocean, Jesse Boykins and The Weeknd (at least his old mixtapes)! I also really like some of that hipster rnb/pop hybrid stuff like FKA twigs. What older artists do you listen to? For me Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder are pretty much the only ones though What’s Going On is one of my favorite albums. / Shlomo is an electronic producer who sometimes remixes Hip-Hop songs but also releases instrumental EPs every now and then. He’s got quite a few cool tracks such as this one. / Thanks for the recommendations man! I’m looking forward to his album, I guess the iTunes version should be up by tomorrow on the usual sites. / Sounds cool, I’m gonna dl it as well. And I agree, Jeezy made some of my favorite songs but he gets really repetitive over the course of a whole album; TM101 being the only exception if you ignore the pop tracks with RnB singers.

I really like how he flipped the relatively bland original imo. And yeah, after hearing the singles I’m looking forward to it too if the rest is as good. Do you mean Live.Love.Asap? But yeah, I would have liked more Cloud Rap-like beats as well. I’m disappointed with the UGK/Juicy J track for the same reason because I think the beat is really basic, I thought it would be akin to “Purple Swag”. Yeah, I see what you mean. I actually liked Future’s part but really didn’t like Q’s verse at all. Generally speaking his music isn’t doing much for me anymore even though I used to be really into it a couple of months ago, I don’t know why. I think he (or his music for that matter) just lacks personality. / Thanks for the info, I need to check out those singles! I agree, I really like the way Future uses autotune in his music. To me it feels like it actually adds something to his sound and fits the production instead of feeling out of place like it’s the case with lot of Trap/Drill rappers, especially with Cheef Keef imo.

Right, what did you think of A.L.L.A.? My first impression was good but there was no track that really stood out for me. I really liked the production though, I’m glad he didn’t go for trap beats which are so en vogue right now but chose more sample heavy beats (not that I don’t like trap beats but I think the latter suit his style better). So production-wise I thought the album was really unique and interesting. On the other hand it was a little too long imo because the first half is much better than the second one. Overall it was pretty solid though. What’s your favorite track btw? / I didn’t know Lil Durk was about to release an album. And I’m looking forward most to the track featuring UGK as well; I really hope it’s going to sound like the songs on Live.Love.Asap with a cool slow Memphis-style beat. I’d be interested to see the list of producers involved with the album but apparently there’s no info about that yet, I haven’t found anything on the web at least. Check out the video, I think the visuals are really dope! He just keeps going with the surprises, first Rod Stewart on the chorus of “Everyday” now he drops this song out of the blue. I have no idea what to expect from the album, I guess it’s going to be very different from his old stuff. Then again, I like it when artists try something new. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the label pushed the album back to create more hype either.

Haha, yeah Frauenarzt is actually really shitty. And believe me after a while I would sympathize with the bus driver; it was funny at first but the lyrics started to get really tiresome after two hours haha. Btw since you apparently know quite a few rappers from that scene, have you heard of King Orgasmus? He’s like Frauenarzt but even more trashy. / Already June the 2nd? Wow, that’s a lot sooner than I expected. How did you like Rocky’s new single with Miguel and Rod Stewart btw? I thought it was underwhelming, I liked the part at around 2 minutes into the song though, where the beat slows down and starts to sound more “trappish”. But Rod Stewart really doesn’t fit it imo.
