"Also, I usually put my music player on and leave. I really want to hit 90,000 plays." Why stop there? You should shoot for 100K! Exceptionally eclectic taste, btw. I'm thinking you must be pretty darn intelligent :)

Actually, about two weeks ago, I shut myself up in my apartment for two days straight and dissected "The Wall." As I followed the whole storyline about Pink's slow construction of his wall, I realized that I had been on that same path not too long ago. I had that same distanced feeling, like I was watching the world from behind a "wall" in front of me all the time. I bet I would have listened to the album a lot more had I discovered it about a year ago. I was really into the Who's "Quadrophenia" at that time, which has a similar concept. Anyway, I've found "The Wall" to be one helluva album. His childhood, his mother, his ex-wife, his hallucinatoins, the trial... the entire story is just one giant spectacle. I'm glad I took the time to really delve into it. I must say though, Gilmour saves it from being a bit tiresome. Without his credits on "Run Like Hell", "Young Lust" and "Comfortably Numb", I have a feeling Roger Waters might've put everybody to sleep! lol

"All Within My Hands" is the one that hit me the hardest. Especially the lines, "Love is control, I'll die if I let go" and "Kill all within my hands AGAAAAIIIIIIIINNNNNN...." As pseudo-therapeuctic as it sounds, that song helped me realize a lot about myself. James wrote it about the way he handled Jason Newsted leaving the band. He didn't want Jason to do anything in his life except Metallica stuff, so the only way James knew how to love Jason was to just crush him and squeeze him to death. I have the same tendencies. I never want people to leave me or do things without me, so I try to hold them as close as I can, even if it chokes them some times. I'd like to think I've worked on that aspect of me thanks to that song (and watching the Some Kind of Monster documentary... have you ever seen that??) The off-key, out-of-tune "KILL KILL KILL KILL!!!! KILL KILL!!!" at the end of the song is as raw as any emotion you'll ever hear on any other album, too.

See that's the thing, it's so polarizing. On the one hand, people like you and me find James' lyrics to be some of the best and most personal he's ever written and we connect with that. On the flip side, some people just say, "It's open-string palm-muting throughout the entire song!! And there's no solo!! Metallica suck now!!" The deeper you are willing to dive into your own head, the more you will get out of St. Anger.

I do remember our St. Anger conversation. I'm glad you can now appreciate it for what it is. It's not a great album by any means, but it is totally honest. And I think, with the more time that passes, more people will appreciate St. Anger. It was the necessary stepping stone to get to Death Magnetic, the next great era of Metallica's history. If Metallica's history is a three-part act, St. Anger is the very end of Act II, where everything looks bleak and totally hopeless. Death Magnetic is the opening of Act III, the revival. In a way, Death Magnetic has vindicated St. Anger's existence, the reason for its creation. Wow, getting a little too philosophical here, lol...

First off, I'm just your average guy from south-western Pennsylvania. I luv music. I listen to mostly classic rock, heavy metal, and classical...and just about anything else, although I'm not real big on rap and country. It varies from Pink Floyd to Sade to Mozart to Pavarotti to Metallica. I probably shouldn't even tell you that when you can just glance at my charts. And I think an ecelctic taste in music is a sign of intelligence. I love listening to music, being an integral part of my life. I'm usually just meandering around this site. You might notice that I have a habit listening to a song over and over and over. Also, I usually put my music player on and leave. I really want to hit 90,000 plays. Anyway, if you ever want to talk, I'll be here to listen....

"Music alone with sudden charms can bind the wandering sense, and calm the troubled mind."

"Men have called me mad; but the question is not yet settled, whether madness is or is not the loftiest intelligence– whether much that is glorious– whether all that is profound– does not spring from disease of thought– from moods of mind exalted at the expense of the general intellect."

- Edgar Allen Poe from "Eleonora"

"It will be found, in fact, that the ingenious are always fanciful, and the truly imaginative never otherwise than analytic."

- Edgar Allen Poe from "The Murders in the Rue Morgue"

"It is more than probable that I am not understood; but I fear, indeed, that it is in no manner possible to convey to the mind of the merely general reader, an adequate idea of that nervous intensity of interest with which, in my case, the powers of meditation (not to speak technically) busied and buried themselves, in the contemplation of even the most ordinary objects of the universe."

- Edgar Allen Poe from "Berenice"
