I haven't done an entry here in forever, so I figure what the hell. Top fifty most played artists time!
1. How did you get into 29?
Primal Scream
No fucking idea. I probably heard about them in some magazine after Vanishing Point, because that's the first album of theirs I owned, though.
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Suede
It was more of an album– Coming Up. I think my friend bought it first; at the time we were living on allowances (bear in mind, I was 16) and so we had to sort of all pick an album and get it and then pass it around to feed our ravenous habits. I remember falling in love with Filmstar, though.
3. What’s your favorite lyric by 33?
The Kooks
Er, not exactly a lyrics kind of band– but then I don't have many of those. I actually really like the first line of Shine On, though there are lots of songs I like better. Safety pins holding up the things that make you mine. Or I have a certain character who likes it. Same thing.
4. What is your favorite album by 49?
The Fratellis
I didn't think I would at first, but I definitely like Here We Stand better.
5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Arctic Monkeys
I have everything– which I guess is two LPs and an EP and a crapload of singles.
6. What is your favorite song by 50?
Autour de Lucie
Qu'avons-nous fait. For JM.
7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad?
Kaiser Chiefs
No. Absolutely not. Even their "sad" songs make me cackle maniacally.
8. What is your favorite album by 15?
Muse
I'm going to go with the obvious and say Absolution. That's the tour I saw, and it has the crazy Rachmaninoff breakdown in it.
9. What is your favorite song by 5?
The Smiths
Holy shit when did they get to be 5th? Er, anyhow, currently it's Cemetry Gates. I just sold a story named after it/inspired by it, so yeah. We're on good terms right now.
10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
Antonio Vivaldi
So, so very many. Absolute favorite is Concerto No. 10 in B Minor, RV. 580, for 4 Violins Op. 3: Allegro– and they have the full track of that movement here! I have a recording I like loads better, but you get the idea. Damn dude.
11. What is your favorite album by 40?
The Stone Roses
Gonna be totally obvious again and go with The Stone Roses. It's pretty much as good as it can get. Ever.
12. What is your favorite song by 10?
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Oh god… this is way, way too hard. Okay, um… I've always had a serious soft spot for Rifles– the first time I saw them I was on my own (yes, I love them that much, I went by myself) and really wished I had someone to grin at when they started that one. But honestly, I think it might be The Line, if I absolutely have to pick. That's inane, I know, but that's the way it is.
13. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
Ilan Eshkeri
Well he did the Stardust soundtrack– that's good enough for me.
14. What is your favorite song by 38?
The Rolling Stones
Wow. These are terrible.
Um… I think it must be…
Actually, I think it's Bitch. Weird, but likely true. That's definitely my favorite album, anyhow.
15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Radiohead
Wow again. Couldn't have picked someone a little more cheeful, could we? No, guess not. Perversely enough, Paranoid Android still makes me happy after all these years. Maybe I just like singing about the crackle of pigskin. Sounds about right.
16. How many times have you seen 25 live?
The Clash
Oh Christ, don't remind me how much I missed :/
17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Flogging Molly
When I worked at OSU I was vaguely acquainted with the sister of one of the band members there. When they were coming to town in like 2001 or 02 once my friend had me listen to a few tracks– among which was definitely Devil's Dance Floor. There were a few others, but I distinctly remember recognizing that at the show a week later. Plus, they played London Calling in its entirety before the show. What's not to love?
18. What is your favorite album by 11?
Franz Liszt
Though Liszt would've been the master of the album format (he did pretty much invent the piano recital, after all), he never really had an opportunity to make them. So I really, really love… er, almost everything. This might be even harder than the BRMC one. But of the stuff they have in full tracks here, let's go with his Sonata in B Minor, which is made of awesome, and also incorporates one of his Paganini Etudes (which I love more than I feel comfortable admitting), La Campanella. Sweet.
19. Who is a favorite member of 1?
Oasis
Liam Gallagher. Hey, fuck off, I love that guy.
20. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Johann Sebastian Bach
Man, you know, all the times I've been to the symphony and no, I actually have never seen any Bach done. How fucking weird. Maybe I should get on that.
21. What is a good memory involving 27?
The Verve
I couldn't even begin to list all the good memories I have with them as a soundtrack. The latest one is that I took the train up to NYC and saw them with Risty, though!
22. What is your favorite song by 16?
Super Furry Animals
Totally has to be The Placid Casual. It pretty much explains them entirely.
23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47?
Supergrass
Probably Caught by the Fuzz. But the first one I bought an album for was Cheapskate, which ended up being one of my least favorite on that fucking fabulous album.
24. What is your favorite album by 18?
The Cure
The hell are they doing this high up? Well, I guess that's Aldo's fault. Anyhow, I'm going with Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, but only for character-related reasons.
25. What is your favorite song by 21?
Stereophonics
Pathetically, still Traffic. It was the first I heard, and it still pretty much embodies what it is about them I still love. Weird observational small town moments.
26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
Nine Inch Nails
Probably Closer. I wasn't into him in high school, but it was really popular right about then.
27. What is your favorite album by 3?
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Why do I keep getting the guys that've been dead for hundreds of years on these album questions? Okay, so works-wise… hell. Uh, everything ever?
Well, Mozart is the reason I like opera, actually, so I should probably go with the typical Marriage of Figaro thing– the opera for people who don't get opera. But seriously, there's something for every mood, so there's just no way. This could not have been a more impossible accident of numbers! Jerks!
28. What is you favorite song by 22?
Suede
Dude, we already did them!
Okay, I'm just going to pick one I really like, how's that? How about The Drowners? It's pure awesome.
ETA 7-9: Okay, I think this question is supposed to be about #2 instead of 22! I was in the car with a mixed CD and the Manics came up and I went, "That's who was missing!" So let's try this again with:
Manic Street Preachers
Which is actually even harder. There are too many that I love and which one I'm hooked on in a given moment usually has a lot to do with what I'm writing. I feel like I should just close my eyes and pick one at random and it'd be as likely as any other. The last one I had in my head for a month straight was Life Becoming a Landslide, so I'll just say that for now.
29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32?
Gomez
Oh Jesus I don't know. Something off Bring It On for sure, but that was like right around when I went to college, and things start to get fuzzy there…
30. What is you favorite song by 8?
Kasabian
Actually, lately it's Fast Fuse, though I pretty much love them all the time.
31. How many times have you seen 17 live?
Ludwig Van Beethoven
I have seen loads of his stuff live! Not conducted by him, obviously, since I'm not undead. But you know. Stuff. I lost count.
32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy?
Louis XIV
Dude, what about them does NOT make me happy?
Okay, but I'm definitely going with A Letter to Dominique. That might say something really wrong about me, but it's the truth. I write horror for a reason– because it's totally sexy!
33. What is you favorite album by 12?
Interpol
Oh Jesus, finally someone who's actually made an album. I go back and forth on this, but today it's Antics. Tomorrow, who knows.
34. What is the worst song by 45?
Kidneythieves
Not a big fan of their cover of Crazy actually. But I don't like covers that much.
35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34?
Giuseppe Verdi
Probably the same Verdi everyone else hears first on TV or in the movies, the Preludio or something else from La Traviata.
36. What is you favorite album by 48?
Starsailor
Whoa I haven't listened to them in forever! Lame! I'm going with Silence is Easy
37. How many times have you seen 42 live?
The Jam
Dammit!
Well, I've seen Paul Weller and that totally counts, dude. He did a bunch of Jam songs, come on!
38. What is you favorite song by 36?
Felix Mendelssohn
NOW we are talking.
Well, I'm going to be stereotypical and say the first movement, the Allegro molto appassionato from his Violin Concerto in E Minor… though I have a rad recording of it played a lot faster and even more heartbreakingly than this one, at least it's there in full! The whole concerto is hardcore though.
39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
Keane
I honestly don't know, though I suspect it was Bedshaped.
40. What is your favorite album by 7?
Franz Ferdinand
Actually, I think it's the new one, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand. I love them all, which I can't say about most bands with three under their belt, but this one is very me.
41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy?
The Kinks
Yes. Everything ever. They cannot fail to make me happy. They are one of my favorite bands ever.
But if forced to give an answer, I have to admit to a longstanding love affair with Dedicated Follower of Fashion. When I was a kid I thought it was the funniest thing ever, and some things never change.
42. What is your favorite album by 41?
Scissor Sisters
Tah-Dah. Brilliant!
43. What is your favorite song by 24?
Beck
Oooh that's a hard one. I think it might be Girl for sentimental reasons… to various characters.
44. What is a good memory you have involving 46?
Carlo Gesualdo
I don't think it's possible to have good memories about this creepy bastard. I do remember standing out on the porch smoking with my brother one night around 3am, and him saying, "Oh man, there's this guy you'll LOVE–!" and proceeding to tell me about him, though. That was fun. Except that it was freezing out there, and I don't know why I was smoking. Must've been drinking. (Imagine that, me and Nick drinking and talking about dorky dead musicians or artists? No way. God my family is lame.)
45. What is your favorite song by 35?
Joy Division
Christ, these ones suck.
Let's say it's… Day of the lords. For Aldo again.
46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
The Charlatans
Feelin Holy, no doubt. I mean, it's hard to find one of theirs that doesn't make me pretty happy. But that one makes me overly happy, so it wins.
47. What is your favorite album by 4?
The Beatles
Revolver. I like them all for different reasons, but I don't even have to think twice about that question. For once!
48. Who is a favorite member of 37?
Snow Patrol
Er, I don't know any of their names. That one guy. Right.
49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43?
The Perishers
My Heart. It's a good song, sappy though it may be.
50. How many albums do you own by 20?
Phish
Only 5, which is pathetic. My brother has the others. Clearly I need to raid his collection.
That took entirely too long. Good. I do love procrastination.
You know you want to procrastinate too! Come on!
