This is one of my all-time favourite pieces. I first heard it as the soundtrack to a sketch by the master clown Slava Polunin. It left a strong impression on me. I presumed I would never hear the piece again, but bought John Surman's album on a recommendation and was delighted to find this track on it.
The synthesiser loop is hypnotic. About 5 minutes into the piece, the soprano sax and bass clarinet start to play in what sounds like a renaissance style. Not only is it polyrhythmic, but polytonal. Usually, a dread-work for modern-classical music, but the amazing thing is, it sounds just great!
