As I've just turned 40, I've been having some nostalgic thoughts about those who couldn't make it or passed away in their 20s, 30s or 40s. Great musicians, great voices, great artists, who are not able to create anything any more, but their works will never be forgotten. The early deaths, which happened at the time when I was enjoying my life:
Rowland S. Howard (24 October 1959 – 30 December 2009) – Australian guitarist and songwriter ( The Birthday Party, Crime and the City Solution, These Immortal Souls). Died of liver cancer.
Mark Sandman (September 24, 1952 – July 3, 1999) – the lead singer and bass player of the American band Morphine. Collapsed on stage (heart attack) while performing with Morphine.
Ian Curtis (15 July 1956 – 18 May 1980) - lyricist and singer of the band Joy Division. Suicide.
Freddie Mercury (5 September 1946 – 24 November 1991) - the lead vocalist and a songwriter of the British rock band Queen. Bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS.
Jim Morrison (December 8, 1943 — July 3, 1971) – the lead singer and lyricist of American band The Doors. Found dead in his Paris apartment bathtub. His death is believed to be a result of heavy drinking and drugs.
John Lennon (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) - English musician and singer-songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles. Murdered.
Robert Burås (12 August 1975 – 12 July 2007) - guitarist and songwriter in the Norwegian rock band Madrugada. Found dead in his apartment by a friend, with his guitar in his hand.
Kurt Cobain (February 20, 1967– April 5, 1994) -American singer-songwriter, musician, and artist, best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the grunge band Nirvana. Suicide.
Peter Steele (January 4, 1962 – April 14, 2010) - the lead singer, bassist, and composer for the gothic metal band Type O Negative. Heart failure.
Sid Vicious (10 May 1957 – 2 February 1979) - English musician best known as the bassist of the influential punk rock group Sex Pistols. Suicide.
Rozz Williams (November 6, 1963 – April 1, 1998) - American vocalist and musician most famous for fronting the bands Christian Death and Shadow Project. Suicide.
Michael Hutchence (22 January 1960– 22 November 1997) - Australian musician and actor, the founding lead singer-songwriter of rock band INXS. Suicide.
Klaus Nomi (January 24, 1944 – August 6, 1983) - German countertenor noted for his wide vocal range and an unusual, otherworldly stage persona. Died at the age of 39 as a result of complications from AIDS.
Ofra Haza (November 19, 1957 – February 23, 2000) - Israeli singer, actress and international recording artist. Died at the age of 42, of AIDS-related multiple organ failure.
Stevie Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990) - American blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Helicopter crash.
Ronald Wayne "Ronnie" Van Zant (January 15, 1948 – October 20, 1977) - lead vocalist, primary lyricist, and a founding member of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Plane crash.
Ken Jensen (1966 - January 29, 1995) – drummer for the Canadian punk rock band D.O.A. Died at the age of 28 in a house fire .
Marc Bolan ( 30 September 1947 – 16 September 1977) - English singer, songwriter, poet and guitarist, best known for his work with T. Rex. Car crash.
Falco (19 February 1957 – 6 February 1998) - Austrian pop and rock musician and rapper, best known for his hits "Rock Me Amadeus", "Vienna Calling"", Jeanny". Car crash.
Tim Buckley (February 14, 1947 – June 29, 1975) -American vocalist and musician. Heroin overdosis.
Jeff Buckley (November 17, 1966 – May 29, 1997) - American singer-songwriter and guitarist. Drowned.
Nick Drake (19 June 1948 – 25 November 1974) - English singer-songwriter and musician. Suicide.
John Henry Bonham (31 May 1948 – 25 September 1980) - English drummer and songwriter, best known as the drummer of Led Zeppelin. Found dead of inhalation of vomit.
Jan Kenneth Barkved ( died 27 October 2009) - singer and charismatic frontman of the Norwegian gothic band Elusive. Found dead in his apartment. The cause of death is unknown.
Nico (16 October 1938 – 18 July 1988) - German singer, composer, fashion model, actress, and Warhol Superstar. Died as a result of injuries sustained in a bicycling accident
Note that the list includes the only ones I know and who died after I was born. That's why I didn't put Janis Joplin or Jimi Hendrix here.
