the best non-ECM Contemporary Jazz

27 Tem 2008, 18:34

Discovering contemporary jazz arena i was very surprised to find out wonderful music of great musicians, but not ECM. Of course they can't be leaved by me without any attention. At first i wanted to place them behind ECM albums, but finally i decided to indicate them apart, letting ECM be unique instead of genre.
So, here they are:

[Global Pacific Records, R2 79335] The Brian Melvin Trio (1986) Standards Zone

[DIW-627] Helge Lien Trio (2002) Spiral Circle

[CAMJ-7763] Pieranunzi, Johnson, Baron (2004) Play Morricone

[ACT 9604-2] Lars Danielsson (2006) Melange Bleu

[Leo Records, CD LR 515] Carolyn Hume (2008) Gravity and Grace

[ACT 9018-2] Esbjorn Svensson Trio (2008) Leucocyte

[ACT 9468-2] Wolfgang Haffner (2008) Acoustic Shapes

The albums of:
Brad Mehldau Trio
Esbjorn Svensson Trio
Avishai Cohen
are next pretenders to be in my top-list.
Kabul Edilen Sunumlar
Europe Jazz, Free Jazz, Jazz Piano

Hm, why would you even think ECM to be number one? Sorry if I sound intrusive, but ECM is NOT music: it is a company. In the 1970´s ECM had a quite different "profile". Are you listening to any of the old stuff?
The early years of ECM were creative for sure, and I do hope you will allow yourself to freak-in to it!
    Best wishes from Sweden,
    H.

Well, you are right and aren't at the same time. ECM is a company, for real... it was just a company, but now it is the "label", like a mark of intelligent chamber/jazz music, so powerful mark that ECM becames mean the style also :)
    My regards

Hmmm... I've always thought (and am now quite sure) that one's "best of" list (or what ever it is called) is more a reflection of the person making the list than any accurate summation of the quality of the list itself. Realistically, your list is a "favourites" list as opposed to a "best of" list because, in order to make such a claim, you would have had to have heard everything recorded in the jazz/improvised music genres to make a truly informed decision and I know that is simply not the case. It's impossible. There are so many recordings released every day, week, month, year that you could not hear it all listening 24 hours a day every day. So, to me, your list suggests that the recordings cited are the recordings you've heard and have enjoyed the most.

Then there's the problem of referring to a label as "the mark of intelligent chamber/jazz music". Doesn't that suggest a sameness to the hundreds of releases from that label? To my ears, I hear little in common between Pat Metheny's "Pat Metheny Group" and Marion Brown's "Afternoon of a Georgia Faun", or the Art Ensemble's "Full Force" or Leo Smith's "Divine Love". Also, to suggest that the ECM label has maintained a consistent level of quality would be to suggest that the label has never released a "stinker" or a "weak" recording. And that's simply not true. "Have you ever heard "The Epidemics"? Is CODONA 2 is as fresh and exciting as CODONA 1 or Nils Petter Molvaer's "Solid Ether" as riveting as "Khmer"? I say NO in both cases. That is not to say that what I think is correct but it is my opinion and that is completely valid. As is your opinion. But when it's presented as fact, personal internal alarm bells start ringing within me.

Then to top it off you seem to think that "intelligent chamber/jazz music" is synonymous with "contemporary jazz" too!

Man, there's so much great music to hear out there...

    Ron

Well, man... I'm confused. But you're right mainly. Thank you - it is the reason for me to change all my pages. I hope i will find the time for it soon.
