  • 2013 contemplating what it is like for a newb

    19 Mar 2013, 15:37

    OK. You've found last.fm.
afaik lastfm started as a way to keep track of what music you had listened to. The ability to play the music came later.
To listen to music here you need to think of last.fm as a sort of vaguely steerable 'radio' station.
If you want to select and play specific tracks you might be better off with the likes of https://www.spotify.com/ & veopod -but I don't know much about them.
The only tracks playable in full, 'on demand' here are from a few (mainly independent) artists who have loaded there tracks onto last.fm with that function enabled. (more elsewhere)
For most artists you will not be able to play specific tracks on demand and when you play a 'radio', because of licensing restrictions, you will probably not hear a particular artist more than about twice per hour.
What you will get is a selection of music based on the listening habits of other users. So depending on how far from

Do you want to listen to some music while you find out more about how last.fm works?
No?: skip to bottom of the page
Yes? Open this link in a new window : http://www.last.fm/listen
In the pale box type in the name of an artist you like or a style of music(also known as a 'lastfm tag'); click the arrow. The radio should start.
(if the radio does not start:
i -try a different description or name
ii -click http://www.last.fm/settings/website and check this is selected... Playback options:Play music in-page
iii -go to FAQ <<<<<<<<<<<link )
When the radio starts you'll see a countdown timer in the lower right corner of the '... Radio' box.
Just below it are two small buttons. The right hand button will be either grey with white letters in it or all grey. Click on it till it is all grey.
That means the 'scrobbling' function is turned off. That is best for the time being.
If you hear a track or artist you would like to hear again : click the 'heart'. This adds the track and artist into your 'library'.
You can skip or ban up to six times(per hour) before needing to try a different station.
If you hate the track and want probably never to hear it again click the 'ban' button.
If the track is OK but you'd rather hear something a bit different click the skip button.

If you want a different station : click the 'Start a new Station' button in the top left of the '... Radio' box. Type a different artist or style.
If you are not sure of the spelling: a separate 'google search' is better than the last.fm search box.
Or, if you see something on the web page which looks more interesting try clicking on it.
If it is a blue link it will open a new tab & you might see a 'Play... Radio' button. (You'll need to stop the first radio)
If it is a link with a large black circle+triangle/arrow it will start that radio playing.

No? -need to type the next bit of info...

Tue 22 Jan – Crows' Bones - Ghost stories and folk songs Loved the theatricality of the second half in particular. But I didn't catch most of the words because the accordion & nykelharp were amplified. :( Maybe I'll have to look out for the CD & hear it hi-fi. Maybe they'll play it 'unplugged' sometime.

Till the tag globalises try this radio in the browser or, if you use the scrobbler. ~~~~~~~~~ For tracks you've not scrobbled yet try this radio(I think) in the browser or, if you use the scrobbler. (...I've not actually checked if that works as it's supposed to yet.) ~~~~~~~~~~

These are codes generated in http://beta.combofm.de/station/ and for some reason they work best if
    your settings www.last.fm/settings/website are :
    > Christmas music filter:I like my radio as it is.
  • What can I expect to play from various radios?

    29 Kas 2012, 09:42

My library : mainly tracks in the library plus some unheard tracks from artists in the library
Someone else's library : tracks in their library
Someone else's library with combo.de Discovery : ditto, but when it runs out of new tracks it will play shared tracks. It will not play tracks not yet scrobbled by the other user -check if the ARTIST was added, would it play unscrobbled tracks.
  • If I was starting from scratch :

    9 Eki 2012, 15:26

    (these notes need revising)

---------------------------------------------------------------note - while you read this you might just want to be hearing some music.
    Playing music.
imho the easiest way to generate a listening session is to go to http://beta.combofm.de/ and log in.
Under 'tags' type in a genre
or under 'artists' type the name of an artist of a style you like.
Click the 'discovery' box and click 'play in browser' (or, if you've already downloaded it, 'play in software').
It will play tracks which are similar, based on the listening habits of other lastfm users.
Tip -turn the 'scrobbling' feature off for the time being. Click the little 'a.s.' symbol in the lower right corner of the listening screen.

    How last.fm works
    1) lastfm is a resource which logs the tracks you have listened to. On lastfm each time a count is triggered it is called a 'scrobble'.

    2) lastfm allows bona fide labels and artists to upload tracks onto the lastfm computers which are then available for users to hear. The process of hearing them is called 'streaming'. All these uploaded tracks are indicated with the 'preview symbol'; the availability will vary depending on the country you are listening from. Clicking the 'preview symbol' allows a 30second preview of the track. If you go to a track page you might find that some labels and artists allow the whole track to play. 'play direct from...'
Tracks listed on lastfm but which do not have the preview symbol are ones which users have scrobbled(listened to) from their own mp3 files, or might be available in a different country.

    3) Each track has its own page. The label or artist is allowed to attach various versions to the track page. When you click on the preview button or hear a full track you could hear any of the attached versions. There is no way to know which version you are hearing. When the track plays on the 'radio' the album displayed does not necessarily correspond with the stream you are hearing. And the time displayed might also be different.

) There are various ways in which lastfm can select the music it plays to you.

tag -if the tag has been attached to the artist/album/track.
artist -based totally on the listening habits of other users.
library -just tracks by artists and albums in that library.
recommendation -based on the listening habits of other users and promotions run by lastfm.

-------------------now it gets complicated, because people have different requirements from lastfm
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    also see
http://www.last.fm/user/Maddieman/journal/2011/09/21/4oqdps_beginner%E2%80%99s_guide_to_last.fmfor ideas on how to get going. Those are general ideas & techniques.
The notes I have written here are from my awareness NOW that lastfm sometimes
    1) repeats particular tracks far more frequently than I would like
    2) does not play some particular tracks enough
The notes enable small tag radios to play abot 60minutes worth of music which should include a particular track once, and not repeat any tracks.
note for later... If the tag radio is over 60minutes it can start to repeat tracks an might miss some other tracks.
If a track is scrobbled into the library without a specific tag it can be quite difficult to hear it again.

I'd only listen to a new station with the scrobbling turned OFF.
I'd use combo.de to start listening. This gives more control.
I'd have the combo.de 'Discovery' setting ticked so I'd only be hearing previously unheard tracks.

Types of radio to listen to :
    My own library.
Neighbours, individually or combined or excluded.
    Tags.
    Artists.

If I heard a track I never wanted to hear again : I'd ban it.
If I heard a track I was happy to hear or not hear : I'd do nothing.
If I heard a track I definitely wanted to hear again : I'd 'love' it.
('loving' is a quick way to put a track into the library and as the page http://www.last.fm/user/headey/library/loved is sortable the track is easy to find. Also the big red heart is easy to spot later.
NB -just noticed that even with scrobbling OFF when doing this from the scrobbler the loved tracks are being given a scrobble, though it doesn't seem instantaneous. So the scrobbles are best removed or it messes up my system later)

I might copy the name of the tag/user/artist station into a journal with a note about why I might want to try it again.

When I had one hour or more worth of 'loved' tracks :
With scrobbling turned ON I'd use combo.de to play what should be just the loved tracks.(see notes on combo settings)
If I wanted only to listen by genre I'd need to select a tag in the combo page.
Any track discovered to be not wanted again : tag it 'delete' then ban it.*
Then use the MassTagger to tag the tracks in runs of 60minutes or less.
    For 2012 my tags are
    -a012fh
    -a112fh
    -a212fh etc to -z912fh

To 'globalise' (i.e. make them a playable tag) use two dummy accounts to tag any two or three tracks from the 'Banned' list with all the tags -a012fh to -z912fh.
    Wait a few weeks.
    Then play.

*in case having a bad track in the library affects recommendations etc, go to the tag page for 'delete'
    www.last.fm/user/headey/library/tags?tag=delete&view=cloud
and remove each track from the library.
