It's probably not the point. In fact I'm almost certain it's not the point. But Last.fm is changing the music that I listen to.

Actually I take the first bit of that back. One of the things that excites me (and everyone else I've spoken to) about last.fm is the fact that it helps you to find new and interesting music, in a non-commercial way.

So, since I've started using it again in the last week or so, I've bought 3 new CDs of things I'd never heard of before. So from that perspecitive it's working really well.

But, the side-effect of having the audioscrobbler plugin running in the background is that I'm nervous to listen to 'bad' music. In the fear that it'll ruin my profile. If I listen to a pop-track, will my neighbours suddenly turn into 14 year old screaming girls? If I indulge myself in a moment of rock, will my recommendations suddenly become innundated with the greatest hits of Hair-Metal. Of course not, but at the same time I have (subconciously?) found myself listening to the 'cooler' end of my music library. But of course that's not the point. Yes, I enjoy Metro Area, Alex Smoke, Prefuse 73 and other 'credible' electronica, but at the same time I have listenend to Fleetwood Mac in the last few weeks - and perhaps even more shamefull things too if you can believe it ;-)

I'm just going to have to learn to listen with pride, and not worry about a few musical 'stains' on my profile.
