Haven’t listened to Janelle’s album yet, only a couple songs. I hear it’s a good summer album so I gotta check it out. I got Atlanta vibes from swarm, you can tell it’s a donald glover show. I thought the ending was a little anticlimactic but enjoyed it overall.

Idk what to think about the new amaarae yet. I like some of it but I keep getting to about halfway and listen to sumn else. Billie eilish was a surprise for me I’m not gone hold you. Didn’t expect the music to grow on me like it did.I tried listening to her music a couple years back and was kinda bored, but gave it another try after watching swarm lol and I fw it. Did u watch swarm?

Yooo it’s been a minute! Very long time. Yeah I decided to revisit igor, sounds better than I remember. Never thought you would cop a Tyler album on wax lol. Still need to give Hypnos a few more listens, liking it so far though.

Hey! How are you? It's been such a long time (I'm the only one to blame here since I shut down my shoutbox for some time, sorry). Lately, I've been very much into Mama Gun's new album "Cure The Jones". It's a fantastic record, very 70s-inclined, with a rich instrumentation. I hear nods of Philly soul, Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Isley Brothers or Smokey Robinson & The Miracles (more 60s-ish this time, true enough) here and there yet it's not a rehash of those "Golden Days" but something of their own. I don't get why these dudes don't get the praise they deserve. Other than that, I've been largely out of touch with the recent releases.

Hey! I've been well! How has everything been with you? It's so funny, I just finished playing Cure the Jones when I saw your post! Ha. I notice that the '70s inclinations are even heavier this time around but like you noted, it still sounds individual. I loved the sunny, spring-like vibe of Golden Days but I am glad they're evolving. 2022 has been fairly uneventful with new releases, to be honest. I do like Moonchild's latest and Toro y Moi's Mahal. The latter is a nice groovy rebound after two decidedly forgettable releases from him. What did you think of Black Radio III?

Ah, great minds think alike! lol I love and cherish Golden Days but like you, I'm glad it's no Golden Days II. Haven't checked the other records, Black Radio III included. Glasper has been rather disappointing in the last few years.

Heyyyyyyy!! It's been too long! I'm doing well, man. Still living, laughing (in hysterics because these last 3 years have felt like insanity), and loving! lol How have you been? That Cleo Sol album should honestly be nominated for all the awards! More than that, I'm go further on a limb to say that Adele's song "My Little Love" sounds VERY inspired by Cleo Sol's entire album. BOOM, I Said it! Also that Run the World Soundtrack is dope right?

That's great! New place? Still in SoCal? I know it's been a while since we talked, I ended up moving out of California to central Oregon and got a house with my (soon-to-be) wife, right before Covid hit. Was a wild year, was unemployed for most of it unfortunately. Man, I am just obssessed with her, she just scratches that itch for me when it comes to "contemporary" 90's-like R&B. I also liked that new Rochelle Jordan! She really needed an update to her sound and I feel like she's right at home on Tokimonsta's label. Need to give that few more listens. I'm a bit partial to the new Flylo, considering I'm a huge anime fan, and the Japanese influence is just perfect. There are some sleeper background tracks, but the one's that stand out are on par with some of his other work.

It's definitely more of a car listen. It needs the subs and treble to be felt. lol. I watch the Verzuz intermittently. I really enjoyed the SWV v. Xscape matchup way more than I expected.

Heyyyy! Congratulations on being in a Masters Program! Super proud of you for that! Shea Butter Baby on my initial listen didn't do it for me, and not because of Ari's voice, but because I feel like the beats she was given/chose weren't up to par. But the more I listened the more it grew on me. Yeah I'm still in Japan! And since moving back I've been more so deep diving on the indie music here than listen to anything western, so I'm kind of out of the loop of what mainly dropped this year. lol @ Kindness being sleepy with the exception of a few songs. For my soundcloud deep dives, I've been really listen to a lot of Flwr Chyld and Peyton. OH the new Taylor McFerrin is hot!

Hey. How are you? I saw that you listened to the new album from Rahsaan Patterson. How do you like it so far? To me it was a disappointment, as with most indie R&B releases (especially Shanachie). I found it a bit bland production-wise.

Hey! You read my mind because I listened to Rahsaaan's latest on a whim and to my pleasant surprise, really liked it! His way with harmonies is mesmerizing. I will agree with you that much of the production sounds fairly cheap; almost like it was created on a tinny Casio keyboard. You can hear the lower recording budget as you would hear on the indie releases from most other major label R&B refugees but I enjoyed it. Did you check out Jamila Woods' Legacy Legacy? That is another favorite of mine for the year and blows her debut out of the water. Are you into Flying Lotus by any chance?

I have not listened to the new Jamila Woods record but I've read rave reviews about it. Yes, I like Flying Lotus (especially Until The Quiet Comes) but I couldn't get into You're Dead!, I guess because of its thematic which is way too dark for me. I have not listened to Flamagra yet but the singles were more club-oriented or so it seems, like something you'd expect from someone like Kaytranada, which is not a bad thing imo. Two records I need to give a spin.

I fw with Mariah's new album. I didn't really know what to expect but i heard some of the singles and liked them so i figured i'd check the album out. It recently hit me that she's almost 30 years in the game that's an achievement lol. Whatchu think of it? Haven't listened to the new AP from start to finish yet. Negro Swan finally clicked with me. I noticed Blood Orange albums always take me multiple listens to click. Dawg i cannot believe it's thanksgiving tomorrow. feels like November started 2 weeks ago!

First of all, I forgot to thank you for recommending me that lost Minneapolis gem "Affection". That's really great! Yes, Fatima's first album is very good as well. Summer Walker makes pretty good moody R&B perfect for late-night listening. Her voice and her music remind me a lot of SZA. I'm not convinced at all by Raheem's latest album though and I guess you're very right to be mistrustful about indie releases by former R&B glories. It's pretty much standard fare. Haven't given Masego and Stimulator Jones a try so far. Talking about blue-eyed soul, Joey Dosik's debut "Inside Voice" is very nice.

Sorry for the late reply. Velvet is actually a great album, among his very best. I love the late-night hypnotic mood. I didn't think at all about Kenny Loggins though. Fatima's "And Yet It's All Love" is a very strong effort as well. I like the fact that she delves into many different styles of R&B, from the most street-wise to the most ethereal. I also loved Piano & A Microphone. Such a moving ,stripped-down affair which emphasizes Prince's exceptional singing and piano-playing skills. What is your opinion on the new releases from Anderson .Paak and Mariah Carey? I haven't checked them out yet.

I've been doing well! I'm actually moving back to Japan for work so I've been getting back into the music and finding new artists to listen to :D I've been completely slacking on going to concerts recently and I hate myself for it. I'm currently obsessed with this relatively new Gwen Bunn that came out last year. She should totally be bigger/get the recognition her and her art deserve!

You sparked my interest saying new JSMN has a Kenny Loggins' influence. I don't mind at all JSMN trying his hands at yacht rock. No, I almost never listen to those Spotify playlists. I know it can be useful though. I'm not very familiar with Fatima but I've heard (and reviewed) Brandon Coleman's album. I have the same opinion as you. It's fairly generic stuff, reminiscent of Zapp and talkbox-era Herbie Hancock with a tinge of jazz (I think that Giant Feelings is definitely the highlight because his jazz has much more personality than his funk). And Vicktor Taiwo bored me to hell. If I'm in the mood for unsettling, weird, experimental, "deep" alternative R&B, I'd choose Serpentwihfeet's "Soil" album over it anyday.

Hey. How have you been? I forgot to ask your thoughts on new Blood Orange's album. I'm not completely hooked but I guess it's a grower. And there are some stellar songs. I also saw that you listened to a new JMSN album, I wasn't even aware he released one. How is it? I was somewhat disappointed with the previous one "Whatever Makes U Happy" which I found too predictable. I guess I need to re-listen to Khruangbin, I only gave it one try earlier this year. Also, did you like "Piano & a Microphone"?

I listened to VanJess' debut only once but I think this is a good album with some 90s R&B tinges. I also somewhat enjoyed Tirzah's debut, a very special one. Not something that I'm crazy about but it's interesting and has a one-of-a-kind sound. About Aretha, tbh, I was never a fan either. And with the notable exception of Motown, I prefer 70s soul over 60s soul by a long mile. While I don't care that much about Aretha's upbeat 60s rhythm & blues numbers (save the famous, obvious ones), I really love some of her ballads. Ain't No Way, Until You Come Back To Me as well as some of her covers of famous ballads by others... I guess I prefer her 70s music as well. But yeah, her passing away made me want to have another look at her discography. And I'm still as divided as before: some songs I like or love, others I, well, just don't mind. I'm still not a fan.

Yea I still collect vinyl. It’s a life long passion of mine and although I haven’t done any digging lately because I just got finished moving, I certainly plan on visiting local establishments really soon. I’m actually setting up my turntable right now lol. Hive Mind grew on me as well. Even though I felt like Ego Death was more cohesive, there’s a lot of beauty within Hive Mind itself. Hold On is magic and I will absolutely be adding this record to the collection. To be honest with you man, I’ve been checked out with music lately because I went through a difficult transition that is now behind me. I’m reviewing your charts and there’s a lot of good stuff that I need to check out . What are some of your favorite records of 2018 thus far?

I'm not a fan of Neneh Cherry but I never really listened to her beyond her obvious hits so I cannot really say. I disagree about her being underrated though. Maybe she is but at least in Europe she was a big star in the 90s, she had a couple of hits, unlike Joi. I guess she's lesser known in the US. And I totally agree with you about yacht rock. I never understood the "rock" moniker in the first place (but I could say the same about "soft rock": does James Taylor -for instance- consider himself a rocker? I doubt it. He is mainly a folk singer or singer-songwriter). Yacht rock has much more in common with blue-eyed soul than with rock imo. Another thing I don't get is why yacht rock is so frequently lumped with AOR (which, unlike yacht rock, deserves the rock tag). To me, these are vastly different genres. AOR is Toto for instance (although they did a couple of yacht rock tracks such as Georgy Porgy or Rosanna but mainly AOR) or stuff like that. I love yacht rock but AOR not so much.

Hey! It's been a long time. How are you? What do you think of The Internet's Hive Mind? I think it's a pretty strong effort, they definitely don't disappoint. Another musical crush of mine is Young Gun Silver Fox's sophomore album "AM Waves". I'm very much a fan of so-called yacht rock and it's a fantastic record if you like the genre. I know you spoke highly of Joi and although I was not very familiar with her work, I have listened and enjoyed her new album "Sir Rebekkah Holylove". It's really a shame she's so under the radar. At least she was featured in season 2 of Marvel's Luke Cage. I need to check VanJess, are they any good? I'm very picky when it comes to new R&B. I was not that enthralled with the S4U album. We have a strange overlap concerning Kenny Lattimore. I had to review his double-CD greatest hits and I can say I'm not much of a fan. As much as I love quiet storm, I find he fall a tad too much on the adult contemporary/MOR end of the genre, not unlike Brian McKnight.
