    ...Although of course listing almost all of his major works is rather overkill. Any disc with a combination of some of the orchestral works/concerti should be a nice intro. The SQ cycle is the only one that I would consider a mandatory initial purchase, if you like the form =)

    The Concerto for Orchestra and Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta are his most popular orchestral works, and there are a wealth of great recordings of them. Reiner is often considered "God" in this repertoire, but I especially don't like his inflexibility. His two ballets The Wooden Prince and The Miraculous Mandarin are both very enjoyable, the latter is more famous and perhaps slightly better. Boulez is very good in these works. Duke Bluebeard is one of the better operas of the century, but I've only heard one recording so far so cannot recommend anything. Zoltan Kocsis has made a superb and very idiomatic series of recordings of his piano works which have been collected into an 8CD box on Philips. Most of them are generally very small pieces, some intended for students, but they transcend just being scholar
