Miles, for me, works only in contrast to what had become the glib, baroque busy-ness of post-Bird bebop. Despite a limited range, he exhibits a mastery of the instrument combined with an Ellington-like ability to create interesting band lineups of talented players. He makes beautiful lines. Having said this, I would add tha liking Miles is akin to a rocker saying they like The Beatles-it's a given common denominator. I'll take Fats Navarro anyday-if he'd have lived and been given the superstar-quality production that Columbia gave Miles, he'd have ruled.
